FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT

13th February 2005

                                                                    QUOTE OF THE WEEK

........classical music is being used to disperse vagrants from public places. On the face of it, this is very funny. We are told that classical music is so ‘painful to teenage ears’ that it can clear intimidating, beer-swilling crowds of youths in an instant. Staff at Co-op stores, for example, have a remote control that ‘can turn the music on if there’s a situation developing and they need to disperse people’. Tyneside Metro reports similar success, especially if the music is either ‘sung by Pavarotti or written by Mozart’. For your better-educated vandal, atonal music has been found to do the trick: the union bar at Leicester University was emptied in an instant by some computer-generated sounds. And apparently we can expect to hear more of this kind of deterrent on the London Underground, which has taken up the scheme. If you want more Mozart in your life, start loitering.

CHARMING

“Depend on the rabbit’s foot if you will,” said the philosopher. “But remember, it didn’t work for the rabbit.”

Robin Oakley

Bigotry tries to keep truth safe in its hand with the grip that kills it.                                        Rabindranath Tagore

WHAT IS IN A NAME?

It was the new teacher’s first morning in class and she was keen to make a good impression on the children. She asked a pretty little blonde girl her name. She replied, “Apple Blossom, teacher.” Noting the teacher’s surprise, she explained, “When I was a baby an apple blossom fell on my head and so Daddy named me his Apple Blossom.” The teacher then asked a little brunette girl her name. Not to be out-done, she said, it’s Cherry Blossom”, explaining it in much the same way. As a baby, she had been sitting beneath the cherry tree. The teacher then turned to a poor, miserable-looking little boy with a twisted nose, lop ears and snaggle teeth. “And what’s your name?” The poor little tyke replied, “Wardrobe.”

ASH WEDNESDAY BIRDS

Fr Andrew Neaum

One of the reasons that John Keats was a great poet was his ability to empathise. If there was a sparrow pecking in the gravel for crumbs, he didn't merely observe the bird, he became the bird. At once he was out there feeling, imaginatively, his bare, little, clawed feet treading the gravel, looking down his beak at the little specks of seed and sand and pecking up minuscule morsels of this and that.

Sadly I am no John Keats, but I do have an ability to empathise with galahs! When I see a galah raise its crest I find myself pulling tight the skin of my bald head in empathy. This doesn't raise a crest, for I have no crest or even hair to rise, all it does is wag my ears and furrow my brow, but in doing this I am at one with the galah. I know and feel exactly how he raises his crest, for are not his feathers but skin deep?

Galahs to me are one of Australia's most lovely creatures. They have a loose-limbed, easy, lazy-seeming way of flying that marks them off from their more frantically flying cousins, the corellas, cockies and parrots.

Best of all though, they are ashen, ash grey. The early morning's fire grate after last night's fire. Grey on top, but glowing red beneath. Disturb the feathered surface ash and a deep, warm-red heat is revealed beneath.

Galahs. Ash Wednesday birds. The ash of penitence covering, insulating from the cold of an indifferent secular world, the warm glow of faith, keeping the warmth of faith alive.

It is an appropriate image because anyone who takes Ash Wednesday seriously is deemed a silly galah by commonsensical twenty first century pagans.

We live in a world that has forgotten that everything worthwhile is costly, that there is no pleasure without pain, that to a great extent pleasure is just the cessation of pain, that the pleasure of eating lies in no small measure in the cessation of hunger, the pleasure of loving and being loved, in the cessation of being unloved and unloving. That the very reason that God has made this world as it is, without it all being beautiful, perfect, pleasurable, painless, is because, were it perfect there would be no heroism, courage, perseverance, sacrifice, selflessness, love even. There would be none of life's great values and qualities, no pleasure worthy of the name.

It is necessary for the world to be as it is, if everything we hold dear is even to exist. Love, pleasure, everything good, without the existence of their opposites, are almost impossible to conceive of. Thus, without the crucifixion there is no Easter. Without self-denial, without discipline, without a penitential walk for forty days in Lent, faith cools, the glow dies.

So the silly flock of eighty or more galahs who were here in church last Wednesday, and who, made their up to the altar to have the sign of the cross, in silly ash, signed upon their silly foreheads, and who will doubtless be silly enough to give up good things this Lent, to sharpen their appreciation of them and to deepen their gratitude for them, must stick with their silliness. For such silliness covers, insulates, keeps warm, the fire of faith.

Silly galahs we doubtless are, but lovely galahs too if, beneath the ashen surface of our lives, the warmth of love and faith is a deep-glowing, glorious red, visible as we unfold the wings of worship to soar heavenward. Glorious galahs!

TOUGH STOUGH

Anonymous

                                                            Dearest creatures in creation,

                                                            Study English pronunciation.

I will teach you in my verse

Sounds like corpse, corps, horse, and worse.

I will keep you, Suzy, busy,

Make your head with heat grow dizzy.

Tear in eye, your dress will tear.

So shall I! Oh hear my prayer.

Just compare heart, beard, and heard,

Dies and diet, lord and word,

Sword and sward, retain and Britain.

(Mind the latter, how it’s written.)

Now I surely will not plague you

With such words as plaque and ague.

But be careful how you speak:

                                                            Say break and steak, but bleak and streak;

                                                            Cloven, oven, how and low,

Script, receipt, show, poem and toe.

Billet does not rhyme with ballet,

                                                            Bouquet, wallet, mallet, chalet.

Blood and flood are not like food,

Nor is mould like should and would.

                                                            Viscous, viscount, load and broad,

                                                            Toward, to forward, to reward.

                                                            And your pronunciation’s OK

                                                            When you correctly say croquet,

                                                            Rounded, wounded, grieve and sieve,

Friends and fiend, alive and live.

                                                            Ivy, privy, famous; clamour

                                                            And enamour rhyme with hammer.

                                                            River, rival, tomb, bomb, comb,

Doll and roll and some and home.

Stranger does not rhyme with anger,

                                                            Neither does devour with clangour.

Souls but foul, haunt but aunt,

Font, front, wont, want, grand, and grant,

Shoes, goes, does. Now first say finger,

                                                            And then singer, ginger, linger,

Real zeal, mauve, gauze, gouge and guage,

                                                            Marriage, foliage, mirage and age.

Query does not rhyme with very,

Nor does fury sound like bury.

Dost, lost, post and doth, cloth, loth.

                                                            Job, nob, bosom, transom, oath.

                                                            Though the differences seem little,

                                                            We say actual but victual.

                                                            Compare alien with Italian,

                                                            Dandelion and battalion.

                                                            Sally with ally, yea, ye,

Eye, I, ay, aye, whey and key.

                                                            Say aver, but ever, fever,

                                                            Neither, leisure, skein, deceiver.

                                                            Heron, granary, canary.

                                                            Crevice and device and aerie.

Ear, but earn and wear and tear

Do not rhyme with here but ere.

Seven is right, but so is even,

                                                            Hyphen, roughen, nephew Stephen,

                                                            Monkey, donkey, Turk and jerk,

Ask, grasp, wasp and cork and work.

Finally, which rhymes with enough -

Though, through, plough or cough? Enough?

Hiccough has the sound of cup.

My advice is to give up.

PRAYER OF THE WEEK

All through this day and week, dear Lord, let me touch the lives of others for good, by the power of your enlivening Spirit, whether through the word I speak, the prayer I breathe, or the life I live. In the name of Jesus. Amen

MONEY MATTERS

If a man runs after money, he’s money-mad; if he keeps it, he’s a capitalist; if he spends it, he’s a playboy; if he doesn’t get it, he’s a ne’er-do-well; if he doesn’t try to get it, he lacks ambition. If he gets it without working for it, he’s a parasite; and if he accumulates it after a lifetime of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life.                                                                                                                                                  Vic Oliver

ANNUAL

GENERAL MEETING

The Annual General Meeting passed off gently, sweetly and speedily on Ash Wednesday.

St Augustine’s Wardens: Bev Condon, Carole Henderson and Norm Weaver.

Parish Councillors: Charlotte Brewer, Joy Campbell, Maureen Cormican, Merv Cowland, Adrian Evans, John Evans, Heather Fitzgerald, John Griffin, Norm Mitchelmore, John Pleming Sandra Simonis, Frank Steen.

Parochial Nominators: Bev Condon, Norm Weaver, Heather Fitzgerald.

Supplementary Nominators: Norm Mitchel-more, Joy Campbell, Sandra Simonis.

Synod Representatives: Marshall Richards, Maureen Cormican, Charlotte Brewer.

Supplementary Synod Representative: Norm Mitchelmore.

While we have only one fully licensed priest we are entitled to only two lay synod representatives and so Charlotte will act as our first supplementary for as long as we don’t have an assistant or associate priest. The Churchwardens of Katandra and Dookie are members of the Parish Council.

LENTEN STUDIES

Lent Studies begin this week on Tuesdays at 2.00pm and on Wednesdays, beginning with a Eucharist at 6.00pm and then a Lenten meal of soup and bread. The Study itself will begin at 7.25pm if anyone is able only to come to that.

The books we are using cost $9.00 and you can take a copy, so long as you sign for it, and so be prepared for the first session. As the number of books is limited I would suggest one book per family, if man and wife are both attending.

EVENING GUILD

The Evening Guild will commence for the year on Thursday 17th February at 1.30pm with a celebration of the Eucharist. This is followed by a meeting in the Narthex. New members are most welcome. President M Kidman 58251962 Secretary K Grills 58216358

PARISH COUNCIL

The Parish Council meets usually on the third Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm. This means that in Lent we are in trouble because there is a clash with the Eucharist, Lenten meal and Study Group. The Parish Council this month will meet at 5.00pm for what will have to be a short meeting and those members who finish work at 5.00pm will obviously be excused if they are late. We will decide what to do about the March meeting, which occurs in Holy Week this Wednesday.

ADVANCE NOTICE

Shepparton High School Chaplaincy Committee is arranging a day trip to Ballarat on Thursday March 17th to visit the Begonia display and an English rose garden. Morning tea and light lunch included $45.00.

FEBRUARY PRAYER LIST

The Prayer List has started from scratch again with the new month. The list does get very long and so this is a way of ensuring that only those who really need prayer are on the list. If there is anyone really in need of prayer who will not be offended to be publicly prayed for, add their name to the list in the narthex and sign your responsibility.

OUTREACH

There is to be an Easter Edition of Outreach. Contributions need to be handed in to the Parish Office by the end of February. Interesting snippets and items are welcome.

A.B.M. ENVELOPES

Any money that you put in the envelopes you find in your pew sheets go to ABM to help fund all their worthwhile projects. They are for Lenten generosity over and above our normal giving. Please give good support.

HARVEST FESTIVAL

In four weeks the Harvest Festival takes place - on Mothering Sunday March the 6th. On this day there will be a breakfast between services with a speaker. For the Harvest Festival we will celebrate not only farm and garden but all occupations and vocations. So do think of something that represents your work with which to decorate the church - be it chalkboard, bedpan, bridle, chainsaw or whatever.

VIOLIN AND PIANO

There is notice on the board in the Narthex of a Violin and Piano Recital with Claire Sterling and Sarah Watson as solists at the Eastbank Centre. Not to be missed.

LAWNMOWER WANTED

One of our rostered lawn mowers has had to opt out for medical reasons. We need a replacement for him urgently! Any offers for this privileged honorary position to the Rector.
