QUOTES OF THE WEEK

A sophisticated rhetorician, inebriated with the exuberance of his own verbosity, and gifted with an egotistical imagination that can at all times command an interminable and inconsistent series of arguments to malign an opponent and to glorify himself. Disraeli on Gladstone

Nothing spoils human Nature more than false Zeal. The good-nature of an Heathen is more God-like than the furious Zeal of a Christian. Anon, perhaps Benjamin Whichcote 1609-1683

Our Fallibility and the Shortness of our Knowledge should make us peaceable and gentle: because I may be Mistaken, I must not be dogmatical and confident, peremptory and imperious. I will not break the certain Laws of Charity, for a doubtful Doctrine or for an uncertain Truth. Benjamin Whichcote

A ROYAL TALE

Before a dance at Balmoral Castle, the company were waiting for the Queen. The Queen Mother was chatting to the Colonel of the Scots Guards; one of his subalterns had just won a country dancing competition and she said that she would like him to partner her for the first reel. The Colonel beckoned to the young man, who was standing by the door and was taken aback when he took no notice. He walked over and spoke sharply, but the boy explained, blushing, that he was to partner the Queen herself. The Queen arrived, the band stuck up and the reel began. As the Queen Mother passed the subaltern she smiled, tapped him with her fan and whispered: “Snob!”

THE APOCRYPHA

I was asked recently about the “Apocrypha” and what it is.

Here is an attempt at an answer, Andrew Neaum

The Old Testament is made up of the sacred and inspired writings of the Jewish people and faith. However, what was considered sacred writing was sometimes disputed and so has tended to vary over the centuries. Eventually what came to be known as the “canon” of scripture was closed, and what was in was in and what was out was out. According to legend the canon of Jewish scripture, which is what we call the Old Testament, was closed by the “Great Synagogue” which started with Ezra after the return from Exile. In reality however, the canon of Jewish Scripture was not finally closed until the latter part of the 1st century AD. So for many, many years there were writings that hovered on the edge of full canonicity before finally being accepted or rejected.

It was the same with the New Testament. The kernel of the New Testament, that is the Four Gospels and the thirteen Letters by St Paul had come to be accepted as inspired and a part of the canon by the early Church about the year 130AD. These seventeen books were placed on the same footing with the Old Testament between the years 170 and 220. The other New Testament books were received as canonical rather later. Doubts persisted for many years, especially in the case of the Epistle to the Hebrews, the Epistle of Jude, the Second Epistle of Peter, the Second and Third Epistles of John and Revelation. Other writings that in the end did not make it into the New Testament, such as the Epistle of Barnabas and the Shepherd of Hermas, were actually admitted as scripture by individual churches, though rejected by the majority.

The Bible as we have it today

The Church at a Council held in Rome in 382AD gave a complete list of the canonical books both of the Old Testament and the New Testament in what is known as the Gelasian Decree and this is the Bible as we have it today. (All of this gradualism makes biblical fundamentalism and biblical literalism appear very shaky!)

The principle that only the Church has the right to declare a book canonical is recognized by the Roman Catholic Church, the Orthodox Churches and the Anglican Church, though the Anglicans differ in excluding from the Old Testament canon those books not contained in the Hebrew Bible. It is these books that bring us at last to what is known as the “Apocrypha”!

What is the Apocrypha?

The Apocrypha is made up of a collection of writings received by the early Church as scripture because they were a part of the widely used Greek version of the Old Testament (known as the Septuagint and originating among the Greek speaking [Hellenised] Jews of Alexandria, which was a great centre of learning and scholarship in the ancient world). These writings were never a part of the Hebrew Bible which came to be the canon of non-Hellenistic Jews and ultimately of Judaism as a whole.

The books in question comprise 1 Esdras, Tobit, Judith, the “Rest of Esther”, the Wisdom of Solomon, Ecclesiasticus, Baruch with the Epistle of Jeremiah, the Song of the Three Holy Children, the History of Susanna, Bel and the Dragon, the Prayer of Manasseh and 1st and 2nd Maccabees. These books contain much wonderful and indeed inspired writing. They date mostly from 200BC to 70AD, that is, before the definite separation of the Church from Judaism. For about four centuries the Church accepted and used them as part of the canon of Scripture. Ironically it was the Church’s use of them to support especially Christian, as opposed to Jewish doctrines, that may have helped persuade the Jews to exclude them from what came to be the final canon of Jewish scripture!

St Jerome introduces the term

In the fourth century Church biblical scholars and commentators came to recognize there to be a distinction between the books that were canonical in Hebrew and those that were not, though the latter were still customarily cited as Scripture. St Jerome, who translated the Bible into Latin (the Vulgate) accepted this distinction and introduced the term “apocrypha” for the latter class, that is those books from the Greek Septuagint Bible not accepted into the Hebrew canon. Jerome carefully noted this difference in prefaces that he included in his translation. However these prefaces were often left out and so ignored in later editions of his Vulgate version of scripture.

Leaving out a lot of complicated detail in the story, it is suffice to say that the Roman Catholic church came to recognise the books of the Apocrypha (with the exception of 1st and 2nd Esdras and the Prayer of Mannasseh) as fully part of scripture, terming them “deutero-canonical’ as opposed to “proto-canonical”, a distinction that by no means implies inferior status or authority. The Eastern Church for some centuries accepted all of the books of the Apocrypha as canonical, but in the end, at the Synod of Jerusalem in 1672, decided that only Tobit, Judith, Ecclesiasticus, Wisdom, Susannah, Bel and the Dragon and Maccabees were to be regarded as canonical.

The Reformation

At the Reformation, the Protestant leaders, wishing to purge themselves of medieval tradition and therefore looking to place all authority in the Bible rather than in the Church or Tradition, refused the status of inspired Scripture to those Books of the Vulgate not to be found in the Hebrew Canon.

The Anglican Church, in the Thirty Nine Articles stated of the Apocrypha’s books that “the Church doth read them for example of life and instruction of manners; but yet it doth not apply them to establish any doctrine....” However the 1662 Book of Common Prayer Lectionary of readings included passages from the Apocrypha as have all our subsequent lectionaries. They are a great joy to me personally when they come up to be read too, I find the Book Ecclesiasticus (sometimes call Sirach) to be especially good to read and think about.

Unfortunately, largely for reasons of economy but also sometimes for ideological reasons, many editions of the bible, especially the Authorised Version, were printed without the Apocrypha and so a widespread ignorance of this rich resource has developed among many church folk.

So there you have the Apocrypha! It contains much wonderful and inspiring writing and a great deal of invaluable history. All serious biblical scholars nowadays vouch to its importance, and its devotional and inspirational qualities are coming to be more and more widely appreciated.

Macabre

Interestingly, the word “macabre” derives from the title of the two Books of Maccabees. Shakespeare’s two daughters were named after two Apocrypha heroines: Judith and Susanna and there are allusions in his plays to about eighty passages from eleven books of the Apocrypha!

A GREAT DISCOVERY

Of all the poems read at the Carol Service on Friday night my favourite is the one that follows. Its author is an Anglican Priest who has written an excellent book called “The Poetic Imagination” which looks at the Anglican Spiritual Tradition through the works of our great lyric poets.

GOING TO GOD

WITH THE SHEPHERDS

If you want to go to God, go without

your certainties. Take your graces. Leave

your certainties behind. If you go looking

for a Triangle inside a Trefoil inside

a Conundrum, you’ll miss the greatest sight

of all, the Holy Trinity playing

children’s games on the lawns of heaven. If

you only look for the Virgin of the Window,

you’ll walk right past Our Lady, laughing & telling

stories with a group of friends.

The disciples

knew not the Lord Jesus in his resurrection

flesh. They were expecting someone else,

someone they knew for certain. And this was like,

but was it he? They knew him only when

                                                            he handed them their bread.

Go to God, then,

taking in the hand of memory

the silken light of a clear dawn after

wet weather and say, with tears if need be,

“You made this.” Take the name of your beloved

and say, “You made him & in him you remade me.”

Take the goodness of your life. And take

some moment of uncertain and life-giving

hope, like an angel whispering or—sometimes—

trumpeting in your ear. These are your guides.

And so

go with the shepherds on their angelic quest.

Go to that hick town that David left

as soon as he got the chance, go to the stable,

see what you never expected to see, the doors

to God opening in that manger

                                                            against all certainty.

And then return to find

anew the tracks of grace: the beauty of men,

the beauty of women, the delight of children,

the running of a swift dog, the flight of birds,

the sweetness of a pear, hands held in quiet.

If you want to go to God, leave your certainties

behind. But be sure to take your graces.

Louis William Countryman

PRAYER OF THE WEEK

Blessed are you, Lord, God, for the surprises of truth. New every day is the surprise that you, God of all that is, should call me child, and yourself my Father. Surprise, to mark your hand at my helm always, down the sea of years. Surprise, beyond conceiving, your grace to one and all once shown, perpetually given. Surprise, the advent of a human baby. Surprise, the spending once and the dispensing for ever, of his Body and Blood. Surprise the lifting up to die, to draw all people to himself, yet never to depart from them; the Son, whom having seen we have seen you, Lord God. Every day you come into your temple, suddenly, silently, bringing your truth, your joy, your might, your Spirit, yourself; deigning to love us within us, so that by thee we may worship you in spirit and in truth. THE PRAYER LIST

The Prayer List has been culled this week. So please put the names of anyone needing prayer on the list in the Narthex, after gaining their consent. If consent is unavailable simply put their Christian name.

CAROL SERVICE

Many thanks to those members of the Carol Choir who stayed the course and contributed to a lovely evening last Friday. Many thanks too to Elizabeth Woodyard our long-suffering organist.

ROSTERS

Some of next year’s Rosters have already been produced as I write this pew sheet, certainly the Readers’ Roster has. Have a look in the Narthex to see if there are any relevant to you.

MONDAY OFFICE MINDERS

Those who volunteer for the usually very quiet task of minding the Parish Office on a Monday Mornings to field phone calls, deal with odd visitors and perform other occasional small tasks are valued indeed as they enable the Rector to lounge at home undisturbed on his day off even if the other clergy are out and about in the parish. Heather Camm would like a few more volunteers for this roster if anyone can oblige. Give her a ring.

PARISH COUNCIL

We hope that the last Parish Council Meeting of the year on Wednesday will finish speedily enough to enable us to retire to the Rectory for a drink and a nibble to celebrate a year amicably survived. A plate of something tasty and even an odd bottle will be appreciated though not strictly necessary. P.S. The Bishop will be with us!

VISITORS

The Pastoral Care Team is beginning to gel and focus. Our first visitation goal in the new year is to visit all the families to whom we send invitations to Children’s Church. Anyone prepared to be a part of such a visiting team please have a word with either the clergy or Dorothy Cook. There will be a short training session for visitors on January 22nd, after the Parish BBQ on that day. We would like to develop a team of visitors for a variety of visits, some to the elderly and housebound, some to newcomers and some of a more general nature. We are aware that there are many parishioners who are already regular visitors of one sort or another simply as a part of living out their faith. It would be good for the Pastoral Care team to know who is already visiting and who is being visited. We have designated February 19th as Pastoral Care Sunday.

NAME TAGS

Always please wear your Name Tag! It is considerate to the forgetful and helpful to newcomers and strangers.

CHILDREN’S ACTIVITY SHEETS

Children’s Activity sheets are available in the Narthex, these are for use weekly by anyone who would like to use them. Would the sides-person for the day please offer them to any children or families who might need a little appropriate diversion during the sermon or intercessions!

ANNIVERSARIES AND BIRTHDAYS

There is a list for anniversary and birthday dates in the Narthex. It is good to be able to congratulate folk on such occasions. Please give us your dates, unless you like them ignored!
