FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY

6th February 2005

                                                                 QUOTE OF THE WEEK

At least in the western tradition nothing so affects our attitude to God as our recognition of evil and suffering. An important factor in the modern bourgeois indifference to God has been a cultivated exclusion of evil from our consciousness. It is not long since English moral philosophers searching for an example of moral evil could only come up with promise-breaking: the liberal imagination shied away from real sin, just as commercial advertising shies away from suffering. It is a commonplace that prisons and hospitals are not only institutions for dealing with crime and sickness but also for hiding them. If we break out of this cosy world and face the real state of affairs we are liable to two apparently contrasting reactions. We may reject God as infantile, as unable to comprehend or have compassion on those who suffer and are made to suffer in this world. On the other hand we may find, as Job did, that it was our own view of God that was infantile, we may in fact come to a deeper understanding of the mystery of God. The first ‘atheist’ reaction may indeed be a part of the second.                                         Herbert McCabe

CODSWALLOP

A bloke was struggling to help his mate land a monstrous Murray Cod. Finally they had it, and it took the two of them to carry it up to the back of their Land Rover, which it nearly filled. Not being greedy, they packed up then and headed for home. Pulling up at the pub for some beer, they noticed the barman craning his neck, eyes bulging in astonishment at the size of the cod hanging over the back of the ute. By the time the fisherman had walked in to order a slab of beer though, the barman had regained his composure. “Only caught one, eh?” he said, wiping the bar.

RELIGION

Religion is man’s attempt to communicate with the weather.

REALITY

Reality is for people who can’t cope with drugs.

A MATTER OF PREFERENCE

CANDLEMAS

Last Wednesday, the 2nd of February, we celebrated “The Presentation of Christ in the Temple”, sometimes called Candle-mas and sometimes called “The Purifi-cation of our Lady”. We blessed all the candles in stock for the coming year and were each given a lighted candle to take to the font, where we crossed ourselves with blessed water and renewed our baptismal promises. There follows a slightly edited version of the homily.

There is something strangely satisfying about the primitive. Steam engines are more interesting than either diesel or electric ones. Vintage cars more interesting than modern ones. Wooden wine barrels are lovelier than galvanised iron brutes. Old stone churches are more worshipful than new brick ones. Ancient and labyrinthine cities are more soul-satisfying than coldly geometrical modern ones. Old people are more interesting than young, as many cultures bear witness, the Chinese, and many African tribes respect, revere and honour the aged, seeing them as repositories of wisdom and tradition. Youth is recognised as callow, inexperienced, dangerously impetuous, untrust-worthy.

The modern world’s obsession with the new and with youth, the advertising agencies’ obsession with the word “New” “New” “New”, appears to go against the grain then. It is more natural for us to look backward than forward, to be aware and appreciative of where we come from, to be conscious of the tradition, reverential to it. In short to be conservative.

Irresistible candles

I love the word Candlemas. It is an old word that celebrates an old and lovely form of illumination, the candle. There is something strangely satisfying about candles. For they are primitive. You can actually see and understand what is going on in a lighted candle, naked flame heating, melting and devouring wax, liquescent wax seeping and creeping up a wick, heating to gas and inflaming. A liquid wax reservoir, damned up by cooler wax walls around the edge, but making periodic breaches in them to trickle down the sides and congeal into fascinating shapes.

The smell of snuffed candles drifting down an empty church, how pleasing that is to my sensitive nose, redolent of the blessed end of innumerable childhood church services.

In our home, when the children were young, we were sometimes prevailed upon by them to have our evening meals by candlelight. However, so fascinating are candles that little fingers would irresistibly fiddle, and there were always arguments as to who blew which candle out.So it was a relatively rare privilege granted them. Children too love candles, candles are primitive, you can see and understand how they work. As you can with a steam engine, which has all its innards on the outside, great muscular pistons squirting steam. Candles are lovely, the electric bulb’s a bright bore, the neon strip an obscenity. There is something strangely satisfying about the primitive, about the first, about the old.

Golgotha’s candlestick

Candlemas celebrates light, candlelight. Candlelight doesn’t totally rout, vanquish, and banish darkness, it is too fragile, gentle and soft to do that. It just pushes the darkness back a little, the darkness is still there, brooding around, flickering, waiting inevitably to snuff so fragile a light.

As such, candlelight is a wonderful symbol of goodness and love and life. All of which are so fragile in our world, in our vale of tears. All so lovely, infinitely lovely, but so terribly fragile, so easily snuffed out by greed, lust, hatred, selfishness. So easily crucified. The darkness of death is waiting, always waiting to snuff out life’s so fragile light.

The Cross on Golgotha hill, on Skull Hill, was really a great big wooden candlestick, upon which there flickered and died the fragile light of the world.

Nunc Dimittis

Candlemas! It originates with old Simeon, the priest in the Temple, who when he saw the infant Jesus, composed what has become one of the world’s most lovely and famous songs: “Nunc Dimittis”, a song which most of this modern generation, hooked so unnaturally upon the new, has never ever heard of, known or loved, but which is sung, or said, at every authentic Evensong:

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word, for mine eyes have seen thy salvation which thou hast prepared before the face of all people to be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel.

It is a great and lovely prayer to use when dying, a prayer of acquiescence, of acceptance of death: Lord now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace... Words that resonate down through the ages, carrying myriad associations. To be a light to lighten the gentiles..... A light that pushes back the darkness, candlelight, flickering, fragile, lovely; hope, joy and peace in darkness. Candlemas, the day on which the Church blesses its candles, which like Christ die to give light to the world. Candlemas, the day on which we process around the church carrying candles. There is something strangely satisfying about the primitive. About the first, the original, the old.

Old meets new

But hopeless traditionalist though I am, even I recognise that the old, eventually, has to give way to the new.

However, it should always do so with reverence. Revolutions are fuelled by hate, they topple, overturn, murder and wreck the old in replacing it. Ideally the old is replaced by the new with love and reverence and regret.

The meeting of aged Simeon and the infant Jesus, was a reverential meeting of the old and the new.

Simeon, a priest of the old Israel, welcomed Jesus, the New Israel. Jesus, who was to be a lover of the Old Covenant, a frequenter of the temple, a practitioner of the Old Covenant, but who nonetheless gave us the New Covenant.

This initial meeting of old and new, of Simeon and Jesus, was an occasion of joy and acceptance, not conflict. It is a pity that the meeting of old and new isn’t always so harmonious.

As a lover of tradition, as one conscious of the profundity and richness of the great tradition which I have inherited, of the mighty river of tradition in which I swim, I would want all proponents of change to the tradition to be lovers of the tradition, not despisers, denigrators and haters of it.

Conflict over the priesting of women

The conflict that racked our Church a decade or so ago, and which unbelievably still racks our own diocese today, the Ordination of women, would have been a less hurtful business if so many of the proponents of it, hadn’t seemed to despise the tradition, vilifying it as discriminatory, patriarchal, misogynistic, evil, derisory, hidebound.

There was an element of all of these things present in the tradition, to be sure but also much that was lovely, loving and good. Much indeed that was lovable.

Had there been more acknowledgement from both sides of a common love of, and reverence for the tradition, how much more creative and gentle and good might have been the acceptance of women priests.

But then, who am I to talk? In this regard I have myself sometimes been too brutal an advocate for change. For which, I suppose, I deserve to be sat down in the harsh, bright, white neon light of hell. However I know, for all that, that the gentle, fragile light of the world, will mercifully still invite me, with all of humankind, into the soft, flickering, sweet candlelight of heaven.                                                                                                          Fr Andrew Neaum

PRAYER OF THE WEEK

O Lord of Love, who are not far from any of your children, watch with your care those we love who are far from us: be about their path: be within their hearts; make it their joy to do your will. Let not distance break the bonds of love that bind them to us and to you; but unite us closer in your love for the sake of Jesus Christ.

Bishop Boyd Carpenter

LENTEN STUDIES

We hope to have two Lenten Studies again this year. One on Tuesdays at 2.00pm and one on Wednesdays beginning with a Eucharist at 6.00pm and then a Lenten meal of soup and bread. The Study itself will begin at 7.25pm if anyone is able only to come to that. Please sign up if you intend coming to a Study Group so that I can order material. The cost is likely to be $8.00 for those who can afford it. Nothing for those who cannot.

PANCAKES

The Shrove Tuesday Pancake Party is at 6.00pm this Tuesday, February the 8th. There is a gold coin donation charge only. Pancakes are delicious if not too thick and chock full of delicious filling. There could even be a glass of wine available before the Lenten drought begins.

FEBRUARY PRAYER LIST

Next week we start the Prayer List from scratch again. The list does get very long and so this is a way of ensuring that only those who really need prayer are on the list.

PRAYER SUPPORT GROUP

The Prayer Support Group has resumed its prayer meetings in the Chapel each week. They take place this year on Tuesdays starting at 7.30pm and all are welcome.

HARVEST FESTIVAL

In a mere five weeks the Harvest Festival takes place - on Mothering Sunday March the 6th. On this day there will be a breakfast between services with a speaker. For the Harvest Festival we will celebrate not only farm and garden but all occupations and avocations. So do think of something that represents your work with which to decorate the church - be it chalkboard, bedpan, bridle, chainsaw or whatever.

DIAL A PRAYER

There is a Jewish gag that phone calls to God are cheaper in Israel because it is a local call. Some years ago some joker took this seriously and an international prayer line was opened in Jerusalem for the benefit, chiefly, of Americans. Volunteers at the modest apartment housing the dial-a-prayer service expected most of the calls to be from troubled people and so they had scriptural texts on hand suited to various needs. ‘It’s a hurtin’ line, but people need it’, said one counsellor. An appropriate scriptural text for telephone companies which rip people off so shamelessly would come from Psalm 94: “The Lord shall cut them off in their own wickedness; yea, the Lord our God shall cut them off.”
