A couple of years ago I was in a small boat on the Nile in Upper Egypt, looking for a place to moor and have a picnic. The current was strong, and there were no trees to attach the boat to. The peasant farmer had noticed our plight, turned up with a stake, drove it into the muddy bank, tied the rope, and went away without a word. A few minutes later he was bathing in the Nile, and not long after that I saw that he had stretched out a prayer mat in the middle of the field and was at his devotions. Then he brought us some tea. LEVATI DAI PIEDI!
An elderly Italian man lay mortally ill in bed, but although suffering the agonies of impending death, he was still able to detect the sweet scent of his favourite Italian anisette-sprinkled biscuits wafting up the stairs. Gathering his remaining strength, he lifted himself from the bed, slowly inched his way out of the bedroom, and gripping the bannister with both hands, staggered downstairs. Breathing heavily, he leaned against the door frame and gazed into the kitchen. Were it not for death’s still all too apparent agony, he would have thought himself already in heaven, because on the kitchen table were hundreds of his favourite anisette-sprinkled biscuits. Could it be heaven? Or was it, perhaps, one final act of heroic love from a devoted wife of sixty years, ensuring that he left this world a happy man? OFFENDING THE FAITHFUL

I sympathise with Muslims offended by insulting outsiders and despisers of their faith. I have been offended by mockers of my faith and the Christ ever since I can remember.
Comedians and artists
Comedians and cartoonists have not often offended me, except when gratuitously hateful or filthy. Over thirty years ago I remember watching the comedian Dave Allen and laughing heartily at his jokes against the Church and Faith. Many of those jokes made valid points, though even way back then I recall reflecting to my family that he was a coward for not mocking Islam. It is easy to mock a faith that teaches love of enemies and turning the other cheek.
It is artists or putative artists who have offended me more thoroughly. Perhaps because they are too deadly serious about their work ever to raise a smile. I am told that in a fashionable art gallery in England at present you can view the latest work of Gilbert and George, a pair of much lauded and indeed literally excremental “artists”. Their show is called “Sonofagod Pictures” and apparently features the head of Christ on the Cross replaced with that of a primitive deity. One picture includes a slogan that is too disgusting and blasphemous to sully a restrained pew-sheet like this. Who can forget Andres Serrano’s “ground-breaking” piece of “art” offensively entitled, “Piss Christ”, a crucifix suspended in a beaker of his own urine, much lauded and defended by sophisticated despisers of the faith.
Balderdash
The age of the fatwa proves nearly all such offenders cowards. If they had any self respect, they would either cease mocking or deriding anyone’s beliefs, or mock and deride Islam as well as all others! Instead there is either silence, or an occasionally sophisticated and usually unrepentant spasm of self-justification. Take the comedian Stewart Lee, for example, responsible for “Jerry Springer The Opera”, which was offensive to many Christians. Instead of simply admitting that he is too frightened to mock Islam, for fear of a horrifying fate such as befell the Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh, he attempts to exculpate himself with some ingenious, if tortured, logic. He claims that Christians have themselves so debased their own iconography (neon Virgin Marys and so on) that it gives carte blanche to others to mock and deride the faith mercilessly. This is not the case with Islam, he maintains, because Islam has always been more “conscientious about protecting the brand”. What balderdash.
I think that it is healthy and right to be able to laugh at one’s faith, and also to criticise it and point to its absurdities, extravagances, inconsistencies and hypocrisies. To be prevented from so doing by fear of violence or by fear-induced legislation is intolerable and cowardly. Those who threaten violence need to be faced down, not pandered to.
Lacking empathy, affection or appreciation
However, most of the criticism and mocking of faith in the western world is offensive just because it contains no such underlying seriousness or nobility of purpose nor depth of understanding. Rather it tends to be gratuitous and stupid for containing no trace of sympathy, empathy, affection or appreciation of the piety and faith attacked. There is no desire or intent to reform, only an implacable contempt and a desire to destroy.
I am not sure that this was so in the case of Dave Allen’s shows or The Life of Brian, for in watching them one suspected the presence of a wry affection for the Church and Faith held up to ridicule. This is perhaps why so many Christians were able to laugh at and enjoy them, though sometimes with salutary unease. But most mockers of faith, God and piety, especially in the world of art, appear actually to hate and despise what they depict, hence their lack of restraint, empathy and good mannerliness, hence too the offensiveness and inexcusability.
Different
In a sensitive Daily Telegraph article, John Casey, a fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, writes as follows: It is simply good manners to try to understand other people’s sense of the sacred. We have very little idea of how Muslims love and revere Mohammed, while resolutely insisting that he was simply a man. Throughout the Muslim world, you see people reading their Korans in shop doorways, on buses, anywhere. Talk to any group of students in Cairo, or Damascus, or Isfahan, and one of them is bound to ask: “What do you think of our Prophet?” To see their Prophet ridiculed, presented as a terrorist, or with a pig’s face causes not just rage, but actual grief.
The trouble with the Danish cartoons that have set the Muslim world ablaze is that they are stupid, historically uninformed and therefore in appalling taste. We all know that Islam commands jihad and that this can mean either inner spiritual struggle or actual fighting for the faith. But to assume, as these drawings seem to suggest, that Islam is therefore a faith given to terrorism is as silly as to assume that Christianity goes naturally with invasion, oppression and murder because of the Crusades, the Inquisition and the expulsion of the Jews and Moors from Spain.
The current political violence by Muslims can be traced to two quite clear events. The first was the fatal decision of President Sadat of Egypt to bring the Islamists into politics as a weapon against the Left. The second was the creation by the Americans of the Mujahideen to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan. This Frankenstein’s monster has stalked the world ever since.
Among our own pieties, I certainly revere the right to satirise and attack religion and rejoice that the Government’s sinister attempts to curb this have been defeated. But we exercise that right more intelligently if we understand the pieties of others. Last year I was in a Turkish bath in Aleppo. A group of young men in high spirits came in chanting boisterously. I assumed it was some equivalent of “Manchester United!” An Arabic speaker set me right: “They are chanting: ‘Revere the Prophet and honour the family of the Prophet!’” Yes they are different.
CONSCIENCE

THE A.G.M. - ACCOUNTS & REPORTS
The Annual General Meeting takes place on the 1st of March. The Treasurer requires the accounts of organisations who have them well before this date please, so that they can be included in his Statement of Accounts. Reports too need to be submitted if they are not to rush us off our feet at the last minute.

Nomination forms for Parish Councillors and Church Wardens are now available in the Narthex. Nominate anyone you think suitable, able and worthy and who consents to be nominated! The election takes place at the AGM on the 1st of March.
HEATHER AWAY
Heather Camm is on leave this week, but the office will as often as not be occupied by volunteers, so don’t hang back.
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS
The start to the school year brings the commencement of Christian Education in our schools. This can be a worthwhile experience, teaching the essentials of the Gospel to children, who for the most part have no idea of who God is .There is special training provided with lots of great resources. If you feel God is calling you to this important work or that you have a gift for relating to children have a word with the Revd Gail Bryce.
BRING A FRIEND
Later in the year we plan to hold a “Bring a Friend Sunday”. Any suggestions for this will be gladly listened to, and do start looking speculatively at any friends you are fortunate enough to possess.

MEN’S BREAKFAST
The first Men’s Breakfast of the year takes place this Saturday February the 18th! It begins with a Eucharist at 8.00am for those who wish to come. The breakfast itself begins at 8.30am and Lionel Waterson will be speaking to us. Invite a friend along and sign up on the list in the Narthex.

HARVEST FESTIVAL
The annual Harvest Festival will be on the last Sunday in February, the 26th. As usual we will attempt to make it a celebration of more than just the harvest of paddock and garden. All our professions and hobbies yield a harvest of good things and so symbols of all of these, as well as fruit and vegetables, can be used to decorate the church. There will be a Bring and Share Lunch on that day as well with an auctioning of produce donated to the display.
HARD OF HEARING
If you have difficulty hearing in church, do try sitting in other than your usual place. Acoustics in buildings such as St Augustine’s, especially when electronically interfered with, are complicated and a change of position is probably all that is needed.
NAME TAGS
Please wear your name tags both in church and narthex. It is being charitable to amnesiacs.
TRANSPORT
If you have difficulty in getting to Church let the clergy or Parish Office know and a lift can always be arranged.
LENTEN STUDIES
There will be Lenten Studies this year as last year on Tuesdays at 2.00pm and on Wednesdays starting with a Eucharist at 6.00pm, followed by a spartan Lenten meal. The study itself will begine at 7.25. The Study at both sessions is one devised by Henri Nouwen and based on Rembrandt’s great painting “The Return of the Prodigal Son”.
