QUOTES OF THE WEEK
Those who roam in search of beauty spend many hours in church. Few of them pray, fewer still cross themselves or kneel. Most breeze in on superstitionless feet, eyes peeled for pictures and minds stuffed with dates and names. Many of them are dressed in ways considered impious by the faithful - women with uncovered legs, men with open shirts flapping like curtains against their bellies. Some of them talk loudly during services, or march past holy icons indifferent to the people who kneel there. Others walk around the altar or take photographs with flash-light. All of them steal. Of course, they don’t steal the works of art, nor do they carry away the bones of the local martyr. Their thieving is of the spiritual kind. They take the fruit of pious giving, and empty it of religious sense. This theft of other people’s holiness creates more damage than physical violence. For it compels a community to see itself from outside, as an object of anthropological curiosity. Those holy icons that returned the believer’s gaze from a more heavenly region are suddenly demoted to the level of human inventions. Those once silent, God-filled spaces now sound with sacrilegious chatter, and what had been a place of recuperation, the interface between a community and its God, is translated to the realm of aesthetic values, so as to become unique, irreplaceable, and functionless. The tool that guaranteed a community’s lastingness, becomes a useless symbol of the everlasting....

A LESS THAN VOLUBLE TERRESTRIAL CRUSTACEAN
An old fellow who had been living alone and feeling sad and depressed, went to a pet shop and asked the assistant for a pet to keep him company through his twilight years, but one not needing too much care and attention. The shop assistant said: “I have the very thing for you and very special too.” He produced a cardboard box, inside of which was a millipede. “What is so special about that?” asked the man. The assistant replied: “It a talking millipede.” The man was very impressed and bought the terrestrial crustacean. Back home he opened the box and asked the millipede: “Shall we go to the pub then?” But he got no reply. He asked the question again, but still his new pet said nothing. So he sat back and pondered his acquisition for half an hour and considered taking it back to the pet shop. He decided, however, to give it one more attempt. Looking into the box he again asked, “Are we going to the pub then?” The millipede replied: “Alright, alright, alright, for heavens sake, don’t go on so. I am just putting my shoes on.”
TRANSFIGURED

The feast of the Transfiguration takes place on August 6th, but there are also two Sundays of the year on which the Gospel of the day features that significant and wonderful event. Today is one of them. The Transfiguration lies behind my own, personal view of art and literature. On top of the mountain, the three disciples were vouchsafed a glimpse of the beauty and mystery that lies at the heart of the ordinary and everyday. Something that the best of artists, composers and authors are attempting to articulate, having similarly been granted an intimation of transcendence, a whisper of angels wings, murmurs of mystery, gleams of glory and hints of heaven,
Hence the poet Henry Vaughan declaring in one of his most glorious poems that he felt
......through all his fleshly dress
Bright shoots of everlastingness.
Or William Blake who saw:
......a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
And who
held infinity in the palm of his hand....
And so on and so on.
On the mountain the three disciples, like so many poets and artists, saw briefly beyond and through the ordinary appearance of things to a glorious reality that lies within them.
What did the disciples actually see? They saw merely Jesus, the ordinary man they knew so well, their friend of the dusty paths and rutted roads of Palestine. But they saw him from a new perspective, with scales dropped from their eyes. It was the ordinary reality of Peter, James and John, but seen for what reality truly is, a medium for the spiritual, the divine.
Any reality, not just Jesus of Nazareth, is capable of some such transfiguration, of being a medium for the revelation of the spiritual or the divine. Jacob said, at Bethel, his desert camping ground, after his dream there of angels ascending and descending a ladder:
How awesome is this place!
This is none other than the house of God.
And this is the gate of heaven.
God can use anywhere or anything to reveal himself. Anywhere or anything, if seen clearly, that is, with scales dropped from the eyes, is shot through with glory. It is a matter simply of seeing, of opening the eyes. Elizabeth Barret Browning, in the passage I have quoted so often from “Aurora Leigh” says,
Earth's crammed with Heaven,
And every common bush afire with God;
And only he who sees takes off his shoes --
The rest sit round it and pluck blackberries.
The supernatural, we Christians assert, exists, of course, but its existence has to be seen or apprehended by way of the natural. The extraordinary is seen by way of the ordinary.
Another passage from the Russian author Turgenev illustrates in a paradoxical way the same point:
I saw myself in a dream, a youth, almost a boy, in a low pitched wooden church. The slim wax candles gleamed, spots of red, before the old pictures of the saints. A ring of coloured light encircled each tiny flame. Dark and dim it was in the church....But there stood before me many people. All fair-haired peasant heads. From time to time they began swaying, falling, rising again, like the ripe ears of wheat when the wind of summer passes in slow undulation over them. All at once some man came up from behind and stood beside me. I did not turn towards him; but at once I felt that this man was Christ.
Emotion, curiosity, awe, overmastered me suddenly. I made an effort .... and looked at my neighbour. A face like everyone's, a face like all men's faces. The eyes looked a little upwards, quietly and intently. The lips closed, but not compressed; the upper lip, as it were, resting on the lower. A small beard parted in two. The hands folded and still. And the clothes on him like everyone's. What sort of man is this? I thought. Such an ordinary, ordinary man! It can't be! I turned away. But I had hardly turned my eyes away from this ordinary man when I felt again that it really was none other than Christ standing by me.
Again I made an effort over myself.... And again the same face, like all men's faces, the same everyday though unknown features. And suddenly my heart sank, and I came to myself. Only then I realised that just such a face - A face like all men's faces - is the face of Christ.
That is the story of the Transfiguration, but backwards. Looking for the transfigured Christ, he saw the ordinary man. Upon reflection he realised they could be one and the same.
PRAYERS DURING THE SECOND WEEK OF LENT
Lent is a time of preparation for Holy Week and Easter. A part of the preparation should be prayer and reflection. Each week during Lent this Pew Sheet will provide an outline to help us do this. It is a guide to be used only by those who find it helpful, and should be used reflectively, ruminatively, and with plenty of time for one’s own words and thoughts and loves.
In the Name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make melody. Awake, my soul! Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn. I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples, and I will sing praises to you among the nations. For your steadfast love is higher than the heavens, and your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens, and let your glory be over all the earth. (Psalm 108:1-5)
I confess, Father and Lord, that I have sinned in many ways but especially

MEMORIAL WALL
The Memorial Wall is to be blessed, with all due ceremony, at 2.00pm on the 21st May, there will be afternoon tea to follow.
LENTEN STUDIES
Don’t forget the Lenten Studies. One on Tuesdays at 1.15pm, preceded by a Eucharist at 12.30am and there will be one on Wednesdays beginning with a Eucharist at 6.00pm and then a Lenten meal of soup and bread, by donation. Any profits to charity, shortfall from the Rector! The Study itself begins at 7.25pm if anyone is able only to come to that.
STATISTICS
This Thursday the 16th March, there is a seminar to which the Rector, at very least, is expected to go. It is to do with the “National Church Life Survey”, a nation wide survey, to be held over several weeks, of all churchgoers. The Seminar takes place in Purbrick Hall, Wangaratta from 10am to 3pm. Anyone interested in coming along please have a word with the Rector.
MOTHERING SUNDAY BREAKFAST
The Ladies’ Breakfast on Sunday 26th March will be between the two services, starting at 9.45am. Heather Pearson. Male members of the congregation gladly don their aprons to serve and minister at the breakfast.
PARISH COUNCIL
The Parish Council Meeting this month takes place on Wednesday, but at 5.00pm, because of the Lenten Eucharist at 6.00pm and Repast and Study that follow.
GRIEF SUPPORT
All who grieve, for whatever cause, are welcome to the Grief Support gathering on Thursday evening at 7.30pm in the Library.
OUTREACH
The next edition of Outreach is to be typed on the 22nd of March and collated and prepared for posting on the 23rd. Those who help with the collating and folding please note the date. Anyone planning on sending articles please do so too. Ron Rose - Editor

YOUTH EVENT
Instead of a “Youth Group” for young people with usually too much to do these days, we intend holding every now and then something specifically for our young folk to enjoy and underline their much appreciated membership of the fine St Augustine’s community. On Friday the 17th, leaving the car park at 5.30pm we head for the Russell’s ranch at Katandra for a meal, of a countrified sort around a fire and activities that will not include snake charming or kangaroo smooching, but will include even more interesting pastimes. All those young folk confirmed during the past few years, our servers and anyone else who remains a suffering school attender is welcome to attend. Please put your name on the list in the Narthex and if you can persuade a parent to help us with transport have a word with one of your clergy.
BRING A FRIEND SUNDAY
If you are fortunate enough to have a friend or two, try to persuade at least one of them to accompany you to church on the 30th of April. The sermon will be friendly, as will the liturgy and music, and on that day, it being a 5th Sunday. We plan on having both clergy present at both services, so Dookie and Katandra folk are invited in to St Augustine’s on that day.

Raffle Books need to be returned please. Leave them with a Sidesperson or at the office. A reminder we are in charge of the pie stall again. If you could please cook just one pie/pizza, quiche, zucchini slice, savoury roll or sausage rolls, sweet pies, tarts, slices, muffins or your favourite recipe.
