One of the least visited memorials in Washing-ton is a waterfront statue commemorating the men who died on the Titanic. Seventy-four percent of the women passengers survived the April 15, 1912, calamity, while 80 percent of the men perished. Why? Because the men followed the principle "women and children first." The monument, an 18-foot granite male figure with arms outstretched to the side, was erected by "the women of America" in 1931 to show their gratitude. The inscription reads: "To the brave men who perished in the wreck of the Titanic. . . . They gave their lives that women and children might be saved." Today, almost no one remembers those men. Women no longer bring flowers to the statue on April 15 to honour their chivalry. The idea of male gallantry makes many women nervous, suggesting (as it does) that women require special protection. It implies the sexes are objectively different. It tells us that some things are best left to men. Gallantry is a virtue that dare not speak its name.

THE CRUELLEST MONTH
One of the most famous and influential poems of the 20th century is T S Eliot’s “The Wasteland”. It begins:
April is the cruellest month
Breeding lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
Winter kept us warm, covering
Earth in forgetful snow feeding
A little life with dried tubers.....
Now that, on the face of it, is utter nonsense. Because April, in the Northern Hemisphere, is certainly not the cruellest month. Nor is there anything wrong with the appearance of the lovely lilac.
Indeed, April is the month not only of the lilac, but also of the snow drop, crocus, daffodil, hyacinth and narcissus. It is the very beginning of spring, the time of hope and joy. As of course it is here in Southern Australia. It is the month, usually, of life-giving Autumn rain, of the heart-gladdening, hope-bringing, yeasty scent of rain drops spattering on summer-desiccated dust.
April isn’t cruel, it is the month of Easter, when the altars in T S Eliot’s adopted Europe are decked with daffer-down-dillies, and when the bare twigs of grey trees begin to blur and fuzz and haze as minuscule buds puff their little chests, perk up and look around, and blackbirds drop strings of liquid notes outside early morning bedroom windows. April the cruellest month? Not at all. Not at all.
But the poem is haunting and has the ring of truth. The reversal of death, coming to life, Resurrection, like dying, is indeed, surely, a painful business.

A little life is easier to cope with than life lived to the full. When we talk of resurrection, we need to talk not only of coming to life from the grave, we need to talk too of coming to life now. Awaking from the sleep of the everyday, from the torpor and little life of the average man. From the deadness of over-indulgence, the cowardice of caution and carefulness, the fear that lies behind hedonism, materialism, behind stuffing our bellies and surrounding ourselves with material security, the deadness of taking always the easiest option, the quietest route, no risks, no dangers. Resting content with our weaknesses, with our besetting sins, with our awfulness. As if there is no more to life than this.
Most of those who don't take God seriously are too damned scared to! Scared, scared, scared!
We need, when talking of resurrection, to talk not only of coming to life from the grave, we need to talk also of coming to life now. Awakening from the little life of the dried tuber beneath the blanket of forgetful snow, awake-ning at the moistening of spring rain, or of antipodean autumn rain, and of pushing vigorously through the earth up into the bright crisp daylight, to wave in the April breeze and the sunshine of life lived to the full.
Resurrection. Coming to full life. Spring rain on cold, dead soil. Autumn rain on summer-desiccated dust. The bringing of lovely life burgeoning from deadness.
But it hurts. It is cruel is coming to life. April is the cruellest month. It is easier to remain in the ground. To remain where we are, as we are, dead to the challenge of Easter, to the challenge of Spring or Autumn growth, to the challenge of Christ. To remain where we are, doing what we have always done, being who we have always been. “I can't help being who I am I can't change.....”
But Christ is risen, risen from the dead. Everything is different, changed, reversed. Easter is a challenge to live, to come to life in him. to throw off the deadness of doing the done thing, the deadness of our everyday predictable lives, to awake from the sleep of the everyday, from the torpor of the average man, from the deadness of over-indulgence, the dread and fear of full, wholehearted faith, the cowardice of caution and carefulness, the fear that lies behind hedonism, materialism, behind stuffing our bellies and surrounding ourselves with material security, and mortgaged luxury. The deadness of taking always the easiest option, the quietest route, no risks, no dangers. Of resting content with our weaknesses, besetting sins, awfulness. As if there is no more to life than this. The deadness of cautious half-belief, lukewarmness....
And instead...To come alive! To come alive by grabbing hold Of Christ's Spirit, of Christ's Church, of Christ's sacraments, and allowing them to send the blood coursing through our veins, enabling us to forgive the unforgivable, to turn the other cheek, to stand up to the evil and the bullying, to do the unpredictable, to choose the difficult course, to take the costly option. To love, love, love, to cast away caution, fear and carefulness, to come alive. To rise, like the first golden crocus, above the cold and bitter earth, to shine as a little golden sun, gladdening men's hearts, making the world a lovelier place. For Christ is risen, risen, risen, and nothing, nothing, nothing, can ever, ever, ever be the same again. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Andrew Neaum

Thank you to flower arrangers and providers,
to the loaners and carriers of pot plants, to servers, Eucharistic assistants, choir members, organists, sacristan, and to all worshippers over the past week. Thank you too to the too small band of church cleaners who terrorised generations of spiders, de-webbed the church and breathed in much venerable dust. You all have contributed to a memorable and holy Holy Week and Easter.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The first of the training sessions for those who wish to be a part of the referral service that is being started by the Social Responsibilities Group has been moved from the 4th to the 11th of May. Anyone interested in being a part of this invaluable project and therefore interested in the training sessions should have a word with the clergy, Heather Pearson, Charlotte Brewer, Andrea Fisher or Heather Camm. We hope that most of those who help in the Office on Mondays will volunteer. We have a large number of requests for help from all sorts of people, not only for food and we hope to be able to refer truly needy folk to expert counsellors and advisors who have offered their services to us for nothing or at cut rates.
FINE MUSIC
On Saturday 13th May at 7.30pm the Turaton Music Company presents: Australia: Land of the Rainbow Gold - The Songs and Stories of Australia in our hall cost is $15.00 per person which includes a delicious supper. Their presentation last year was truly excellent, so do support this function which through Turaton’s generosity also supports us.

Please note that the Church Council meeting this month is on Wednesday 26th, a week late!
BRING A FRIEND & ALL THAT JAZZ
Sunday, April 30th is “Bring a Friend Sunday” at St Augustine’s and we hope that everyone will attempt to bring along at least one friend to either the 8.30am or the 10.30am Eucharist. The 10.30 service that day will be “jazzed up”, with Adrian Parsons taking it away on the keyboard, Victoria Heenan providing vocals and all of us foot-tapping along and joining in souped up versions of well known hymns. The sermons will be lively, friendly (code word for short), and hit the spot, and there will be a bring and share meal afterwards with more music for those with the good sense to stay on and enjoy themselves. Please note the date, and start softening up friends. Don’t let anyone decline an invitation with the ridiculous argument: “the building will fall down if I come along.....” If sinfulness really did shake the foundations your clergy would have been buried under rubble years ago!
PARISH FAIR MEETING

The Meeting commences at 5.00pm, but come at 4.30 for “coffee and cake” to launch our planning for the 2006 Fair. All welcome! (Ring Pat: 58 313080 for further information) The meeting is timed to conclude at 6.30pm.
LIL’S WEDDING
On Saturday, at 4.30pm, Elizabeth Neaum marries Nathan McGrath in St Augustine’s. All are welcome to the Church Service, after which there is a cup of tea on offer in the narthex. Sadly not all are invited to the Reception in the Hall, only because neither family’s pockets are bottomless. However it is a Church family occasion, so do feel free to come along if you wish. At 11.30pm on that night we celebrate too the Orthodox Easter with our Macedonian friends. You are also welcome to that service.
