Why do so many scientists and philosophers distort human life.....? Because they have come to believe, in the words of Richard Dawkins, that "science is the only way we know to understand the real world." It's a view that confuses the physical world with the ‘real' world. Toothache, Midgley points out, ‘is as real as teeth' and ‘debt is as real as the house that was bought with it.' The real world contains ‘electrons and elections, apples and colours, toothaches and money and dreams.' Philosophers like to think of themselves as unprejudiced seekers after truth, yet most arrive at conclusions remarkably in tune with the orthodoxy of their age. In the past, that meant Christian orthodoxy. Our modern orthodoxy is less defined, but no less stringent. How many contemporary philosophers would seriously consider limiting the franchise or extolling pederasty?

The fourth surgeon chimed up, "You know, I like construction workers, they always understand when you have a few parts left over at the end, and when the job takes longer than you said it would." But the fifth surgeon put them all to silence when he said, "You are all wrong. Politicians are the easiest to operate on. I have arranged our annual holiday for June. So in midwinter we hope to be heading for the coast and Robe in South Australia, where a good friend has a lovely house for us to use. May the weather be wet, wild, windy and chill, everything that Shepparton’s is not. Summer has its joys, not least being able to pad about in bare feet, but the joys of winter outdo them. This week has been so busy it is good to spare a wistful thought for holidaying.
A family wedding
Our household is gearing up for a wedding in April. Elizabeth is to be married on the Saturday after Easter, in St Augustine’s, with the reception in the Hall. If Margaret seems a bit dazed or distant these days it is because she is making bridesmaids’ and bride’s dresses, among all her other chores and duties. One of the best things about the wedding is that the diocese’s synod has had its customary date changed this year to suit the bishop’s holidaying and leave arrangements and so it falls on the same date as our wedding. This provides a perfect excuse for me to avoid that far from stimulating, quasi-democratic, annual bout of tedium, punctuated by spasms of rage! My delight in discovering this happy coincidence of dates has been punished by also discovering that the wedding date is also that of the Orthodox Easter. So I shall have to stagger across from the reception to preside at the midnight liturgical ceremonies of our Macedonian community!
I have passed the wedding preparation of the happy couple over to their priest in Canberra, the Rector of All Saints’ Ainslie. Were I to attempt the job myself Elizabeth might well hear me out and then call in Margaret and counsel the two of us!
Rejoicing in Kant
If one is fortunate and blessed, what a delight one’s children are. Rachel sent us a lovely little email the other day which indicates her love of the study she undertakes and of the faith she professes. I quote it knowing her to be indulgent enough of her dear papa to be able easily to forgive his temerity. It is a little piece dashed of in a fit of enthusiasm, not at all considered: I have just read the first page of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. It is absolutely awesome. God is a subtext in every line, the transcendent, the inexpressible aspect of metaphysics. It seems metaphysics is impossible without recourse to God or a God-substitute and we innately turn to these metaphysical questions. I also see how people like Foucault and the post-modernists could come after Kant because he hints at the idea that metaphysics is bound by principles that it has to employ, yet which can never solve the problem. All the positions you can hold in philosophy, including theism, seem to me to be very closely connected, as if we are all trying to say the same thing, but using a slightly different vocabulary which then totally changes the way we understand each other. So theism and atheism, well thought out, end up being very similar positions. Anyway, I was just very excited by it all so I thought I would share it with you.
My response to her was typical Papa, I fear: Good stuff Ray! I look forward to a two hundred word synopsis of the whole ‘Critique’ from you eventually, so clearly expressed, so nut-shellish, that even I can understand, appropriate and devastate with it!
Placatory
I am an exceedingly fast reader, or rather, skimmer, for much of what I read is scarcely appropriated and rarely retained. When I am writing anything, other than casual jottings such as these however, I am far less speedy. Funeral homilies, for example, can sometimes take me an hour and a half to get what I consider to be just right, usually from half past five in the morning until I pad over to church and chapel. In a recent funeral homily I inadvertently left out one of the most telling lines. Although it still made sense, it didn’t make all the sense I had invested it with. To placate my hurt I publish here the missing sentence, duly set in its context. It has a wider applicability than just to a funeral congregation and so is arguably more than just self indulgence...... What a profound, beautiful and courageous story the Christian narrative is. It undergirds nearly everything good that remains in our fast decaying culture. To exclude our self from being a part of such a story, to deny our self and our family immersion in it, by baptism, and marinading in the love, forgiveness, and communion it aspires to in its life, simply because of possibly mythical or fabulous elements to the story, is to miss not so much the wood for the trees, as the treasure for the chest. It is like refusing to lose yourself in the profound and cathartic truth of Shakespeare’s Lear or Hamlet by dumbly asking, “Ah but did it really happen?” Who cares? It’s true in every sense that matters!
SHROVE TUESDAY

In the Christian calendar, Shrove Tuesday is the English name for the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which in turn marks the beginning of Lent. In many solidly Roman Catholic countries in Europe and the Americas, this is the last day of Carnival. In some historically Francophone places it is Mardi Gras, French for ‘Fat Tuesday’; the most famous celebration under this name is the New Orleans Mardi Gras.
The origin of the name Shrove lies in the archaic English verb ‘to shrive’ which means to absolve people of their sins. It was common in the Middle Ages for ‘shriveners’ (priests) to hear people’s confessions at this time, to prepare them for Lent.
Food traditions
In Ireland, Australia, and Canada, Shrove Tuesday is known as ‘Pancake Tuesday’, while in Britain it is popularly known as ‘Pancake Day’. In both regions the traditional pancake is a very thin one (like a French crêpe) which is served immediately sprinkled with caster sugar (superfine sugar in the United States) and a dash of fresh lemon juice or alternatively drizzled with Golden syrup.
In the Canadian province of Newfoundland, household objects are baked into the pancakes and served to family members. Rings, thimbles, thread, coins, and other objects all have meanings associated with them. The lucky one to find coins in their pancake will be rich, the finder of the ring will be the first married, and the finder of the thimble will be a seamstress or tailor. Children have great fun with the tradition, and often eat more than their fill of pancakes in search of a desired object.
Pancakes are eaten to use up milk and eggs, which are not eaten during Lent, and would otherwise spoil during this period.
In Sweden Shrove Tuesday is known, just as in France, as ‘Fat Tuesday’, or Fettisdagen in Swedish. The day is marked by eating traditional Swedish pastry, called Semla. Supposedly, the pastry is only to be eaten on this day but it is seasonally available from New Year until the beginning of Lent.
In Iceland the day is known as ‘Sprengidagur’ (Bursting day) and is marked with the eating of salt meat and peas.
In Poland, and also in areas of the United States with large Polish populations, paczki are a common find.
In Lithuania it is called Užgavenes, and many pancakes (blynai), Lithuanian style doughnuts (spurgos) are eaten.
In Estonia it is called Vastlapäev, this day has to do with hopes for the coming year. On this day, families go sledding and eat split pea and ham soup. A toy is made from the ham bone by tying the bone to a string and spinning it around to make a whistling noise. There is a tale told that if you cut your hair on this day, it will grow fast and thick for the next year!
In England
In England a famous pancake race at Olney in Buckinghamshire has been held since 1445 on Shrove Tuesday. Many towns throughout England held traditional Shrove Tuesday football (‘Mob Football’) games dating as far back as the 12th century. The practice mostly died out with the passing of the 1835 Highways Act, which banned the playing of football on public highways, but a number of towns have managed to maintain the tradition to the present day including Alnwick in Northumberland, Ashbourne in Derbyshire (called the Royal Shrovetide Football Match), Atherstone in Warwickshire,Sedgefield (called the Ball Game) in County Durham, and St Columb Major (called Hurling the Silver Ball) in Cornwall.
At St Augustine’s
At St Augustine’s, in Shepparton, Australia there is a pancake meal outside the Parish Hall starting at 6.00pm on Tuesday 28th of February. There will be a gold coin donation charge only. There could even be a glass of wine available before the Lenten drought begins.

THE A.G.M. - ACCOUNTS & REPORTS
The Annual General Meeting takes place on the 1st of March. The Treasurer requires the accounts of organisations who have them well before this date please, so that they can be included in his Statement of Accounts. Reports too need to be submitted if they are not to rush us off our feet at the last minute.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER
The World Day of Prayer service this year takes place on March 3rd at the Salvation Army Church on the corner of Orr and Nixon streets 10.30. Th Speaker is Kaylene Fyfe and the theme is ‘Signs of the Times’ South Africa. Fr Andrew will be talking at the service in the Uniting Church at Katandra at 8.00pm on that day.

HARVEST FESTIVAL
The Harvest Festival takes place next Sunday the 26th. We will attempt to make it a celebration of more than just the harvest of paddock and garden. All our professions and hobbies yield a harvest of good things and so symbols of all of these, as well as fruit and vegetables, can be used to decorate the church. There will be a Bring and Share Lunch on that day as well as an auction of produce. Bring along a can, jar, bottle or packet bought from the cash harvest.

If you have difficulty in getting to Church let the clergy or Parish Office know and a lift can always be arranged.
LENTEN STUDIES
There will be Lenten Studies this year as last year on Tuesdays at 2.00pm and on Wednesdays starting with a Eucharist at 6.00pm, followed by a spartan Lenten meal. The study itself will begin at 7.25. The Study at both sessions is one devised by Henri Nouwen and based on Rembrandt’s great painting ‘The Return of the Prodigal Son’.
