Love of animals seems to be an innate capacity in most humans, an immanent grace which they inherit. Its intensity varies, but mostly you will find that people who are lukewarm towards the brute creation have lacked intimate contact with it. Unlucky humans!
And among that small minority of humans who willfully abuse animals, I have never found a single one who isn’t a total rotter, through and through, as ill-natured to their fellow humans as to dumb creatures. Nor have I seen even one who can manage to hold his head up when exposed - say in court when they have been prosecuted by the RSPCA. Hangdog and humiliated is the right description for all of them. When they stand to receive the magistrate’s sentence, one thinks of Mark Twain’s aphorism: “Man is the only creature that can blush - or needs to.” Peter Ryan - Quadrant March 2006
JESUS AND PHILLIP ADAMS
The long standing argument between Jesus and Phillip Adams eventually extended even to their respective facility upon the computer! Their argument was so long and inconclusive that God the Father, tired of the bickering, finally declared, “That is it. I have had enough. I am going to set up a test that will run for two hours. From the results, I will declare a winner.” So Phillip Adams and Jesus sat down at their keyboards and typed away.
They moused. They faxed. They e-mailed. They e-mailed with attachments. They downloaded. They did spreadsheets. They wrote reports. They created labels and cards. They created charts and graphs. They did some genealogy reports. They did every job known to man.
Jesus worked with heavenly efficiency and Phillip Adams with fiendish fervour. Then, ten minutes before their time was up, lightning flashed across the sky, thunder rolled, rain poured, and the power went off. Phillip Adams stared at his blank screen and muttered every disgusting word that had ever appeared in all of his far too numerous books of jokes. Jesus merely sighed. Finally the electricity came back on, and each restarted his computer. Phillip Adams searched desperately until he murmured in despair: “It’s gone! It’s all gone! I lost everything when the power went out!” Jesus, on the other hand, quietly started printing out all of his files from the past two hours of work. Phillip Adams observing this exploded with the righteous indignation he usually reserved for evangelical fund-amentalists, John Howard and George Bush. “It is not fair!” he complained. “He has played foul! How is it that all his work remains and mine does not?”

Kerry Packer, to my mind, was an unpleasing and boorish fellow, even if John Howard did term him a “Great Australian”. He stood for almost everything that is contrary to the sweet Gospel we hold to and love. His infamous and foul-mouthed fatuity, uttered with self-satisfied glee on being brought back to life by modern medicine after several minutes of “death”..... “There’s f....ing nothing there”, ( as if, blind to God on this side of death’s divide, he would he be anything else on the other!) has been quoted ad nauseam by fellow lovers of meaninglessness in the media. So what a pleasure to read in the Anglican monthly “Market-Place” a robust critique of him. It quotes Richard Walsh a man close to Kerry Packer and an “on the record” Christian unbeliever as saying what one would have liked some of our Christian leaders to have said about Packer as icon..... “Packer in his lifetime was an icon for those who espoused the philosophy of whatever it takes. There was much to admire in his force of personality and in his exploits, but under no account should he be mistaken for a model citizen. He had utter contempt for politicians, for the arts, for idealism of any kind, for the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake and for those who did not share his world view. His ethics were defined simply as whatever the law allows... In some ways he unfortunately represents all that is wrong with contemporary Australia.... To compound the insult, we taxpayers have been forced to pay for the central event in this secular canonisation.” The article continues... “Saint Kerry? It that is what it has come to, then God help Australia and God help the silence of Australia’s churches......”
PRAYERS DURING THE THIRD WEEK OF LENT
Lent is a time of preparation for Holy Week and Easter. A part of the preparation should be prayer and reflection. Each week during Lent this Pew Sheet provides an outline to help. It is a guide to be used only by those who find it helpful, and is to be used reflectively, ruminatively, and with plenty of time for one’s own words and thoughts and loves.

Continue to read reflectively a few verses each day of St Luke’s Passion account, which begins at chapter 2214. Imagine yourself into the story, be conscious of God with you.
Into your keeping Lord I put all doings of today. All disappointments, hindrances, forgotten things, negligences. All gladness and beauty, love, delight, achievement. All that people have done for me, all that I have done for them, my work and my prayers. And I commit all the people whom I love to your shepherding, to your healing and restoring, to your calling and making. Amen.
QUESTIONS ANSWERED
What is the meaning of the robes worn
by the priests at Eucharist?
They are very ancient customary garments worn by clergy from the times of the early church, say from 400 onwards. Even before then, priests wore the traditional robes for formal dinners, and indeed the main ones are still the old formal dinner clothing from ancient times. The Lord’s Supper has always been regarded as a special meal with the Lord.
But although these garments were used in ancient secular life, they acquired special symbolic meaning for the Church.
1.The Amice: A cloth hood, once a proper hood worn as protection against wind and weather, but now worn around the neck. Church meaning: the Helmet of Salvation Ephes 617.
2. The Alb: (from the Latin for “White”) A white robe, similar to that worn in the old Middle East and Roman Empire when “going out”. Church meaning: to represent the saints clad in raiment white, even if the wearer is far from white inside, at least having a go. Rev 6 11
3.The girdle or cincture: a rope around the waist. The Alb is ankle-length, so you need something to tuck it up into if you need either to run or fight. So the girdle is the symbol of being ready. “Let your loins be girded and your light shining, and be as one prepared for his Lord.” Luke 1235. It is also a symbol of Truth, Ephes 6 14
4. The Stole: A strip of material around the neck, in the colour of the season. It is the main symbol of priestly authority, and is the ultimate vestment. Church meaning: “Take my yoke upon you and learn of me....” see Matt 1129. The wearer must be “yoked” to Christ.
In all these garments, the priest must understand that he or she is representing the whole people of God before the one eternal God the living and true, and also humbly representing Christ before the people of God. They should not be donned without appropriate prayer and submission to God’s will. They remind us of our privilege and our responsibility, and of what God does for us in Christ. They are, therefore, a material prayer. The Stole is the priestly garment par excellence.
5. The Chasuble. From the Latin Casula, a diminutive of the word for a house, so a “little house” or a shirt. In ancient times, it was the overcoat, a circular piece of material with a hole in the middle for your head, placed over the toga or alb or whatever you had on underneath. It was worn by the presiding person at the Lord’s Supper because it was a formal dinner, but it acquired Christian meaning: Ideally a seamless garment, it represented the Robe of Christ before his crucifixion. The presiding person, a presbyter or priest, represented the people before God by wearing people’s clothing, but also represented Christ before the people, by wearing His seam-less robe. It is also a biblical reference to the Robe of Righteousness, at the Wedding. Matt 2211
The wearer of the Chasuble must be very humble indeed, for he (or she) is really standing in the middle: the people before Christ, Christ before the people. No one can pop it on without being reminded of tremendous responsibility and utter dependence upon God’s grace.
This question has been good for us, as we are reminded of the need to ask for God’s grace to animate us to carry out the responsibilities symbolised by our church vestments. We pray as we put them on, that we might be animated (the new word for “enabled”) to live out and live up to their significance. Ellis Stanley Jones

LENTEN STUDIES
Don’t forget your commitment to the Lenten Studies. One on Tuesdays at 1.15pm, preceded by a Eucharist at 12.30am and one on Wednesdays beginning with a Eucharist at 6.00pm and then a Lenten meal of soup and bread, by donation.
MOTHERING SUNDAY BREAKFAST
Next Sunday is Mothering Sunday. A good day upon which to invite a friend along to church! There is a “Ladies’ Breakfast” between the two services, starting at 9.45am. Ordinary women as well as ladies are welcome too! Male members of the congregation gladly don their aprons to serve and minister at the breakfast. We need:
(1) help from menfolk to help set up the tables.
(2) names of those wanting breakfast on the list in the Narthex
(3) Lots of flowers for posies by Friday or early Saturday
(4) Helpers with making posies from 10.00am on Saturday.

BRING A FRIEND SUNDAY
If you are fortunate enough to have a friend or two, try to persuade at least one of them to accompany you to church on the 30th of April. The sermon will be friendly, as will the liturgy and music, which could be of Jazzed up form at the 10.30 Eucharist. It being a 5th Sunday, we plan on having both clergy present at both services, so Dookie and Katandra folk are invited in to St Augustine’s on that day.
HOME COMMUNIONS
If you know of parishioners who are sick or unable to attend church for any reason, please let the clergy know so that arrangements can be made to administer Holy Communion at home or in hospital.
