God With A Lancastrian Accent

Cock your ear at popular literature with me, to the writings of someone whose voice carries the suspicion of an echo, of a voice behind the voice, the voice of God. Though because I listen out for and want to find God’s voice in everything I read or listen to, I might well be accused of hearing voices not there.
I talk of Roger McGough, who has joined two other great loves of mine, John Betjeman and Wendy Cope as another of those enjoyable poets who dance on the divide between light verse and poetry proper.
Their usually buoyant, often amusing, sometimes sad verse, tumbles down onto the side of real poetry, as if by accident, just now and then. That is, into profundity, pathos, the perfect image, or even, sometimes, into the sublime. Though finding the sublime in the irreverent and funny Roger McGough does take a bit of doing.
Only a year ago, or so, on holiday on King Island I was introduced by my son to an old pop song downloaded onto his computer and which I had never heard before. I loved it at once. It is called “Thank You Very Much.....” and is by the group “Scaffold”, sung in a deep Lancastrian accent.
Many less alienated from popular culture than I am, might well know it, not least because it comes, from a decade when most of us were a little sprightlier and more in tune than we are now, the sixties, when yours truly was most certainly enjoying his brief day or two of hay.
“Thank you very much” is only the second song sung by Scaffold that I know, the first being “Lily the Pink”, which I also loved all those years ago when it first came out.
Well, Roger McGough, the poet was a member of that band, and I discover, only now, that he is a very fine versifier. How can anyone not love someone, who writes fragments like this entitled :
Cake
I wanted one life
you wanted another
we couldn’t have our cake
so we ate each other.
Or this one, entitled: Beguiling
She is so beguiling
That when she beckons
I can run a mile
In twenty seconds.
Or this one, entitled:
Survivor
Everyday,
I think about dying.
About disease, starvation,
violence, terrorism, war,
the end of the world.
It helps
keep my mind off things.
One of the stories told in his autobiography, which as yet I know only from a review written by Robert Douglas-Fairhurst, but have ordered, concerns another of my favourite poets, Philip Larkin. He is very definitely a poet rather than a light versifier, and a miserable, misanthropic fellow in much of his writing too, so this story about him told by Mc Gough, as follows, is very much in character: “One of my friends, the scriptwriter Neville Smith, once met Larkin in Hull, when the great man was sheltering from the rain under a large umbrella, waiting for a No 24 bus. Smith's opening gambit? "I did enjoy ‘The North Ship’." The poet's reply? "If you think you can begin a conversation in order to share my umbrella, you've got another thing coming."
Although McGough has been termed one of the “dissident poets”, by a critic, on the evidence of his autobiography, so his reviewer claims, “the word "diffident" would be closer to the mark....” The poet, he says, even describes his poems “in a way that makes them sound somehow accidental, “as if McGough and the words just happened to find themselves in the same place at the same time.”
“Some of this,” he goes on to say, “may be put down to McGough’s working-class, Catholic childhood in Liverpool, growing up at a time when ‘poetry was what girls and dead people wrote’, and early attempts at creating a new audience needed to be done with ‘humour and self-mockery’ if they weren’t to be dismissed as pretentious.” The reviewer suggests that in McGough’s autobiography there is “.....a residual sense of guilt that writing poems comes a poor second to the ‘good works’ he might have undertaken had he followed an alternative career path as a priest...” McGough, he goes on to say “...... seems far more interested in what hasn’t happened to him, the lives he hasn’t led.”
An attractive sounding person, because diffidence can be an attractive quality, in that it comes close to modesty and even humility, and is a relief from the over-confidence and arrogance that we find in so many writers or artists who insist that their work is immortal, and that we need to genuflect before its ultimate significance, as well as purchase the stuff at absurd prices.
My own love of writing and art and music, you might have noticed, is all of a piece with my love of God. Anything that I really like and love needs to, has to resonate God. My ears and eyes and heart are all on the lookout for him. I only truly and deeply love art, music and literature that manifests God, though not as propaganda, not as advertisement, not as proselytising or arm-twisting, not crudely “in your face”. That, it seems to me, is not God’s way.
God walks our world’s Emmaus Road incognito. Even in that fabled manger he was just an ordinary, mewling and puking little baby. We need eyes and ears a-tuned to him, hearts that brim with his love, to see, hear and know him. Art to be real art, shows God similarly incognito, asking for and needing to be discerned.
Am I insecure in faith, though, if all I read and listen to needs to speak God to me? I don’t think so. I keep my eye on the atheists, I read their articles, even sometimes their books and I feel the persuasiveness of the best of their arguments. I am not frightened of them, indeed I respect the best of them and in their way they too can speak God to me by usefully reminding me that certainty is unavailable, as well as unnecessary and undesirable to real faith. More importantly though, all that can be truly considered art, even if ostensibly atheist, does or can resonate God, because all art in some way or other represents reality and God is real, real, real!
To finish then, a very famous poem by Roger McGough, you might know. On the face of it, it is anything but Christian, is even anti-Christian in its detail, and yet in its attitude to old age, in its cavalier, positive, courageous outrageousness, it speaks to me, nonetheless, of Jesus of Nazareth, echoing Ezra Pound’s view of him in the Ballad of the Goodly Fere. A courageous, attractive healthy approach to life and death is most emphatically Christian.

DUTIES
In case you haven’t noticed, on the back of some of the duty rosters there is an outline of the duties and tasks called for. One of the requirements of Readers and Intercessors, for example, is to position yourself near to the lectern or at it, during the Prayer for the Day (First Lesson) or during the Psalm (Second Lesson) or during the Creed (Intercessions) so that we are spared the long, anticipatory silence as the reader creeps up from wherever seated! It also means that should a reader be not present the absence can be acted upon and remedied more expeditiously!
THE A.G.M.
The Annual General Meeting takes place on the 1st of March. The Treasurer requires the accounts of organisations who have them well before this date please, so that they can be included in his Statement of Accounts. Reports too need to be submitted. It is particularly important that they be submitted early if not typed. The easiest reports to deal with come in on a disk, of course, but this is not a requirement! Also a part of the A.G.M. is the nomination of Councillors and Wardens. Start thinking about this now and ask folk you consider to be suitable if they are willing to offer themselves. Nomination forms will be available soon.
ARE YOU INTERESTED IN THE FAITH?
Two sermons recently concentrated upon the importance of “belonging” and being invited into the Faith. Please invite and encourage folk to come to an “Enquirers Course” beginning on the 7th of February. The course will be for those outside the faith, but interested in it, for those who would like to deepen their knowledge of the faith, for prospective Confirmation candidates and also for those who would like to sponsor any newcomers to faith.
PARISH BARBECUE
There is a Parish BBQ today. Do come along if you are able - from 12 noon onwards. After-wards there is a short training session for volun-teer parish visitors of folk on our mailing list.
AUSTRALIA DAY
It would be most unpatriotic not to observe Australia Day and so the Parish Office will be closed and there will be no Choir Practice. There will be a Eucharist at 8.00 as usual however, for true patriots.
