MONKEY BUSINESS
The car of a man driving along a lonely road broke down near a monastery and so he went to the monastery, knocked on the door, and said, “My car has broken down. Do you think I can stay the night?” The monks graciously accepted him, fed him dinner, even fixed his car. As the man tried to fall asleep, he heard a strange sound. A sound not like anything he’d ever heard before. The Sirens who nearly seduced Odysseus into crashing his ship came to his mind. He didn't sleep that night. He tossed and turned trying to figure out what could possibly be making such a seductive sound. The next morning, he asked the monks what the sound was, but they said, “We can't tell you. You're not a monk.” Distraught, the man was forced to leave. Years later, after never being able to forget that sound, the man went back to the monastery and begged for the answer again. The monks replied, “We can't tell you. You're not a monk.” The man said, “If the only way I can find out what is making that beautiful sound is to become a monk, then please, make me a monk.” The monks replied, “You must travel the earth and tell us how many blades of grass there are, and the exact number of grains of sand. When you find these answers, you can become a monk.” The man set about his task. After years of searching he returned and knocked on the door of the monastery. “I have travelled the earth and have found what you have asked for: By design, the world is in a state of perpetual change. Only God knows what you ask. All a man can know is himself, and only then if he is honest and reflective and willing to strip away self deception.” The monks replied, “Congratulations. You are now worthy to be a monk and the Abbot will make you one. We shall now show you the way to the mystery of the sound.” The monks led the man to a wooden door, where the Abbot said, “The sound is beyond that door.” The monks gave him the key, and he opened the door. Behind the wooden door was another door made of stone. The man was given the key to the stone door and he opened it, only to find a door made of ruby. And so it went on. He needed keys to doors of emerald, gold and diamond. Finally, the monks said, “This is the last key to the last door.” The man was apprehensive, but to no purpose. His life’s wish was behind the door! He unlocked it, turned the knob, and behind that door he was amazed to find the source of that haunting and seductive sound... But we can't tell you what it is because you’re not a monk.
STORY TELLING

When I was a little boy, to avoid nightmares, I would try to give myself exciting dreams by telling myself a story, before I went to sleep. Imagining myself into a story, I would be a gallant cowboy, riding my horse off to do something heroic, trusting that the story I told myself, would cross over into my dreams and so grant me a deeply satisfying, coherent dream with myself the heroic highlight.
Bruising encounters
I still talk a lot to myself, indeed, I am at it all the time, my mind is never still, I have imaginary conversations, in the shower, in bed as I fall asleep, as I drive the car, always, always, in my mind I am anticipating likely encounters and conversations that will occur later in the day or week, preparing myself, word for word, for them, and also reliving and retelling events and conversations that have happened earlier in the day or week, voicing my side of a conversation, then the side of my interlocutor. All the time I am telling and smoothing out my personal history, making sense of bruising encounters, ascribing motives to people that help explain what they’ve done or said. I fit them into the picture, into the story. I rearrange reality to be make it more real. All the time, all the time, I am clothing my experience, my world in words, dressing reality in words, making my world in words, making the past fit the present and anticipating the future into coherence with what is now.
All the time, then, I am turning what happens to me into narrative, into a coherent story. I am a narrator, I am a creator, an artist, a word smith, making sense of Andrew Neaum and of his context, of his past and of his future. Turning me into story.
Indeed I am story, and you are a story, you have a beginning , a past a present a future, your present makes no sense at all without its past remembered, clothed in words, without its future anticipated, clothed in words, granted coherence, shape, sense, purpose, direction, honed into a fine, plausible, compelling story.
A paragraph without a page
But our little stories are parts of bigger stories, are mere episodes in greater narratives, the narrative of our father’s family’s history, of our mothers family tree, of our nation’s story, of our whole civilization’s saga.
Fully to understand who we are, for our story to make complete and real sense, it needs its full context in the bigger and greater stories.
Unless we are aware of the great stories, unless we can feel ourselves a part of them, fit ourselves into them, see our little story as a vital episode of the greater stories, our own story can never really make full sense. We never fully know our place in the scheme of thing, we are a sentence without a paragraph or a paragraph without a page, or a page without a chapter. We have no context.
A babble, a bleat, a shriek
The greatest story in the world, I believe to be the one centred on Jesus of Nazareth, converging through hundreds of years to its fulcrum, its crux, its cross, on Good Friday, and then exploding into light and glory two days later on Easter Sunday, showering, spreading and diverging down through hundreds of years to provide the most essential of all contexts to my little story and your little story hundreds and hundreds of years later.
It is a coherent story of stories, a mega story, the mega story, a meta narrative, the meta narrative, a mighty story, the story of stories.
Our little stories, whether we like it or not, are a part of it, our context, our civilization, our language our art, our imaginations, have been shaped, moulded and fashioned by it. It articulates and gives shape, meaning and sense to suffering and love and goodness and beauty.
Unless we know it inside out, are conscious of being a part of it, we don’t know ourselves, can’t know ourselves.
To be ignorant of it, to cut ourselves off from it, is to be less than ourselves, is to be all but nothing, a story with no beginning, no end, no context, a jumble of words, a babble, a bleat, a shriek, a squeak.
Footling fact and fancied fiction
The story’s crux is retold, relived, remade every Sunday on the altar, its very essence is walked every year through Lent’s hungry, forty, wilderness days, Holy Week’s forbidding, ominous betrayal and treachery, Good Friday’s via Doloroso, Golgotha’s nightmare..... All the way to Easter’s empty tomb, to Mary Magdalene’s encounter with that mysterious, glorious gardener, the disciples numinous breakfast on the beach, and on to Pentecost’s wind, fire and power.
Wilfully or through idleness, greed or busyness, to refuse the walk and to tear out our short page from the great story that gives our own little story sense, to baulk at a miracle or two, to peck pedantically at footling fact as fancied fiction, to refuse to see that all stories including even one’s own, have an ambiguous relationship to reality, are as much reality as reflections of reality, are reality smoothed and honed into meaning and words and that even God has to tell his great story as do we ours, filtered through reality’s and history’s flesh and blood, has to articulate his Word into mere words, is to make nonsense of our life, of our own story. It is to refuse our self meaning, context, history, destiny, is to refuse the world, heaven, the Lord, glory, Easter, redemption, alleluia, hosanna, the New Jerusalem, Zion, Eden, Paradise, the Promised Land of milk and honey.
So then, let Easter 2006, be the time when you placed your little story, fully into its context, and become a living and lovely little part of the story of stories that gives your story its sense, context, meaning, purpose, and destiny.
See you next Sunday, and every Sunday thereafter. For Christ is risen, he is risen indeed. Alleluia.

The support, help and care that the Neaum family has received from parishioners and friends to ease all their endeavours and efforts with Elizabeth’s and Nathan’s wedding over the past weekend has been overwhelming. Thank you all very, very much. It has been much appreciated and has contributed enormously both to the joy and success of the occasion as well as to our remaining sanity!
DOOKIE AND KATANDRA
There is no service at Dookie or Katandra next Sunday. We hope that those who can will join us for “Bring a Friend” Sunday at St Augustine’s.
BRING A FRIEND & ALL THAT JAZZ
Sunday, April 30th is “Bring a Friend Sunday” at St Augustine’s and we hope that everyone will attempt to bring along at least one friend to either the 8.30am or the 10.30am Eucharist. The 10.30 service that day will be “jazzed up”, with Adrian Parsons taking it away on the keyboard, Victoria Heenan providing vocals and all of us foot-tapping along and joining in souped up versions of well known hymns. The sermons will be lively, friendly (code word for short), and hit the spot, and there will be a bring and share meal afterwards with more music for those with the good sense to stay on and enjoy themselves. Please note the date, and start softening up friends. Don’t let anyone decline an invitation with the ridiculous argument: “the building will fall down if I come along.....” If sinfulness really did shake the foundations your clergy would have been buried under rubble years ago!
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The first of the training sessions for those who wish to be a part of the referral service that is being started by the Social Responsibilities Group has been moved from the 4th to the 11th of May. Anyone interested in being a part of this invaluable project and therefore interested in the training sessions should have a word with the clergy, Heather Pearson, Charlotte Brewer, Andrea Fisher or Heather Camm. We hope that most of those who help in the Office on Mondays will volunteer. We have a large number of requests for help from all sorts of people, not only for food and we hope to be able to refer truly needy folk to expert counsellors and advisors who have offered their services to us for nothing or at cut rates.
FINE MUSIC
On Saturday 13th May at 7.30pm the Turaton Music Company presents: Australia: Land of the Rainbow Gold - The Songs and Stories of Australia in our hall cost is $15.00 per person which includes a delicious supper. Their presentation last year was truly excellent, so do support this function which through Turaton’s generosity also supports us.
