......those country churches were places of order and decorum; to breathe their bottled faith was to internalize an age-old stillness and completion, to stand for a moment inside a community and in reach of its past......Villagers had for centuries been welcomed here by baptism, and had passed from here to their graves. In this sacred space people had raised their collective eyes to heaven. Within minutes I would lose all interest in the building and its aesthetic powers, and join the mumbling widows in their pew. And if - as sometimes happened - a priest entered from the sacristy, obedient to a calendar that mysteriously sanctified the hours, I would listen to the Latin words, and join in the Credo, whose plainsong opening phrase - ‘Credo in unum Deum’ - is surely one of the most succinct affirmations of faith in music. I was not a believer, but not a mocker either. Standing, kneeling, sitting and singing in obedience to imperatives that for me were options, I was for a moment a believer in belief, a fellow-traveller of pilgrims who would soon pass out of view... A MATTER OF PERSPECTIVE

A poor old widow here in Australia was one day invited to come to a solicitor’s office to be told that a distant relative in England had died and left her a lot of money. The dear old lady was quite overcome; what was she going to do with all that money at her age? “Well,” suggested the solicitor, “what about making a trip to England to see the old country for yourself?” “What, me?” said the old woman. “Me go to that country where all those convicts came from?”

My father was very much a practical priest. He was good at turning his hand to almost any manual chore, and particularly accomplished as a carpenter and plumber. I consider being brought up in a rectory a huge privilege not only because of the opportunities it provides for meeting all sorts of interesting people, ranging from the loopiest of lunatics and the most blatant of beggars to the saltiest, salt-of-the- earth Anglican pew sitters, the craziest of clerical buffoons and the battiest of bishops. It is also because the rectories of which I was a part as a child always had a well equipped workshop, once my father had settled in.

As children we were involved in fixing, building, making, gardening and so on, just as much as in serving, choir-singing, phone-answering and so on. Some of the practical and joyous tasks and involvements I remember from the rectories of my youth, include rearing pigs and smoking their hams in the English rectory barn, shaping the stone and then building a chimney and fire place onto the little wooden rectory on Tristan da Cunha, making from especially imported oak a set of altar rails for the church on that island, helping to plan and build two houses from scratch on a new mission station in Rhodesia. Planning and building a garage, servants quarters and an outside room for my good, university student self, as well as a new office for the Rectory in Salisbury in Rhodesia, as well as a memorial garden and lady chapel and much, much more. Tradesmen rarely needed to be called in for anything, and my father seemed to take an almost masochistic delight in even the foulest of plumbing jobs!

I have become much more desk and people bound than ever he was, but even so I do occasionally break away from this, and with great pleasure. Wednesday was just such a day. As on Saturday night, so on Tuesday night, a passing drunkard, as full of mischief as of beer, paused on his passage alongside St Augustine’s to give our bell a couple of boozy dongs. This not only awoke me but caused me to remain awake for ages, planning ways to thwart the fellow’s joyous mischief. On Wednesday I spent a happy hour up a ladder, drilling a hole in the highest corner of the porch, putting in a wooden plug and large hook, and then another lighter hook on the end of a long piece of dowel from my shed. The bell rope can now easily be hooked up, well out of reach, and in the dark almost invisibly. The dowel for hooking up and hooking down is kept in the library, next door. I trust that the boozy would-be campanologist is not a reader of this pew sheet and so already planning to thwart my thwarting.

On the same day I collected the pump I had ordered to get the fountain on the south side of the church working again. This stagnant pond had disgusted me for too long, and so some admirable work by Marg Carroll, her husband and Carole Henderson, inspired me to put an end to stagnation once and for all. I affixed the pump, placed it, turned it on, and Peg Galt’s beautifully planned fountain was working once more. Most satisfying.

On the same fine Wednesday, with Margaret and Gail’s help I then hooked up the useful if rusty old church trailer to my new tow bar, and we went furniture shifting. We brought to the hall two fine lounge room suites for purposes secret, at this stage, to Gail, Margaret and the Grief Support Group. Many thanks to Dorne Wilkinson for her generosity in regards to these acquisitions.

Another satisfactory and practical chore was re-drilling and replacing the icon onto the aumbry door in the chapel. Badly affixed in the first place, it had finally detached itself and so it is now less badly affixed and reattached.

That evening I sat down to a curry, home made from home grown aubergines, glowing with self-satisfaction, for I had also on that day helped run off the “Outreach”, taken three services in nursing homes, visited a delightful pair of long-time elderly parishioners, selected and printed Sunday’s music and sorted out most of this pew sheet.

To offset any suspicion that I have been own-trumpet blowing too much in these few words, let me admit to one disaster. At least an hour was spent looking for an important set of documents that I seem to have lost. This is something that happens far too frequently in the little “cave of making” that is my study. I have still not found them and the consequences doubtless dire will be no less bearable for being well deserved!

PRAYERS DURING THE FOURTH WEEK OF LENT

Lent is a time of preparation for Holy Week and Easter. A part of the preparation should be prayer and reflection. Each week during Lent this Pew Sheet provides an outline to help. It is a guide to be used only by those who find it helpful, and should be used reflectively, ruminatively, and with plenty of time for one’s own words and thoughts and loves.

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

O Christ, my Lord, again and again I have said with Mary Magdalene,"They have taken away my Lord and I know not where they have laid him." I have been desolate and alone. And you have found me again, and I know that what has died is not you, my Lord, but only my idea of you, the image which I have made to preserve what I have found, and to be my security. I shall make another image, O Lord, better than the last. That too must go, and all successive images, until I come to the blessed vision of yourself, O Christ, my Lord.

Remember the past day and think of two sins. Be sorry and purpose amendment

Grant me, O God, the heart of a child, pure and transparent as a spring; a simple heart, which never harbours sorrows; a heart glorious in self-giving, tender in compassion; a heart faithful and generous, which will never forget any good or bear a grudge for any evil. Make me a heart gentle and humble, loving without asking any return, large-hearted and undauntable, which no ingratitude can sour and no indifference can weary; a heart penetrated by the love of Jesus whose desire will only be satisfied in heaven. Grant me, O Lord, the mind and heart of your dear Son.

Remember your loved ones. Imagine them, be thankful and pray for them

Lord in your mercy hear my prayer.

Recall some of the folk you have met during the past 24 hours and pray for them...

O Lord, I remember before you all the workers of the world: workers with hand or brain: workers in cities or in the fields: those who go forth to toil and those who keep house: employers and employees: those who command and those who obey: those whose work is dangerous: those whose work is monotonous or mean: those who can find no work to do: those whose work is the service of the poor or the healing of the sick or the proclamation of the Gospel of Christ at home or in foreign places. Amen.

Continue to read reflectively a few verses each day of St Luke’s Passion account, which begins at chapter 22¹⁴. Imagine yourself into the story, be conscious of God with you.

WELCOME TO THE BISHOP

The Bishop was due to make his annual pastoral visit on Palm Sunday, but due to an unforeseen and pressing engagement on that Sunday, and not wishing to forego his visit, he is with us today, and delighted, I might say, to be participating in the blessing of new vestments, in the baptism of new Christians and in the celebration of Mothering Sunday with its breakfast, where he will join the men in waiting upon the ladies! We welcome him and trust he enjoys himself among us.

MOTHERING SUNDAY BREAKFAST

Between the two Eucharists at St Augustine’s today there is breakfast in the hall and a chance to listen to Heather Pearson talk of some of her travels on behalf of GFS/Townsend. Do stay on if you possibly can.

POSIES AND SIMNEL CAKE

In honour of Refreshment Sunday we should all receive a piece of Simnel Cake, though if the baptism visitors are very numerous at 10.30 then perhaps only the favoured will be lucky! Many thanks to the Guilds for providing this traditional fare to mark the halfway point in the austere season of Lent. I am particularly grateful to Rosemary Mitchelmore upon whom I dropped the responsibility of organising the posies to mark Mothering Sunday. It can be an onerous task, and she spent hours folding and preparing our magazine “Outreach” this week as well! Thank you Rosemary, only the trustworthy and capable are so cruelly treated!

MOTHERING SUNDAY VESTMENTS

Although our new rose coloured vestments were worn for the first time on mid-Advent Sunday, we decided to postpone officially blessing them until mid-Lent Sunday, which is the second of the two Sundays in the Church Year upon which rose coloured vestments are called for. The vestments have been donated to us by John and Kate Horder in memory of their beloved and lovely granddaughter Georgia Morcom, who died tragically on the 20^th June 2004. It was the idea of Mothering Sunday, with its concomitant focus upon little children who are, of course, the little parcels of grace that turn women into mothers, that gave the Horders the idea of just such a memorial as this for their granddaughter. As I noted in Advent, upon wearing the vestments for the first time, the fact that they are worn on only two Sundays of the year should ensure their lasting for generation after generation! Made by Margaret Neaum, they will eventually be complemented by a rose-coloured altar frontal as well. Welcome to members of the Horder family, here to bless the vestments by their presence and love and may little Georgia rest in the peace of the God of love until granted a new means of being herself in resurrection.

COMMISSIONING OF COUNCILLORS

Next Sunday, the 2^nd of April, we intend commissioning our new Councillors. We have decided to do this at the services that our Councillors usually attend and so there will be a Commissioning ceremony at the 8.30am, the 10.30am, Dookie and Katandra. Would all Councillors endeavour to attend please.

GARDEN WORKING BEE

Please note Saturday’s Garden Working Bee which, now that autumn is upon us, will swap from providing a convivial breakfast interlude in the hall to a convivial luncheon conclusion in the rectory garden.

PRAYER LIST

We start the Prayer List for the sick and needy from scratch again next week, it being the first Sunday of a new month. The names of those in need of prayer need to be put on the list in the Narthex and signed for, only if their permission has been given. If that permission is unobtainable, then only a Christian name should be used.

TUESDAY’S STUDY GROUP

Tuesday’s Study Group had better meet in the Den at the Hall, as there is a funeral at 2.00pm on Tuesday.

PALM CROSSES

The therapeutic art of Palm Cross making will take place on Saturday the 8^th April, in the Supper Room, beginning at 10.00am. A good social occasion and very useful it can be to have on one’s C.V. “Palm Cross Maker”.
