FOOD FOR THOUGHT

I downloaded the article from which this extract appears not long after the Tsunami because it provided good food for thought. It is by Alex Beam, from the Boston Globe. (AN)

“A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic.” Just because the famous aphorism is attributed to Joseph Stalin doesn’t mean it isn’t true. It is a commonplace of the pulpit and the editorial page that we are all joined in one great brotherhood of man and woman, that ‘’each man’s joy is joy to me, each man’s grief is my own,” to cite a popular hymn. But for many years I have wondered if that is true. I think compassion is like a radar signal that loses force the further it radiates from our hearts.

I can easily understand why someone is more affected by the loss of a favourite actor, or a well-regarded talk-show host..... or by the death of an author one has enjoyed, than by the passing of tens of thousands of faraway strangers. In 1994, I remember seeing a picture of dozens of bodies washing over a waterfall during the Rwandan genocide, and reacting with shock and indifference. Those events seemed to be taking place in a galaxy far, far away.

Human apathy toward mass deprivation is legendary. Aid organizations know this. For decades, the relief organization Save the Children has urged first-world donors to underwrite the well-being of a specific child somewhere in the Third World. Why? Because no one cares about saving children in the abstract. But people do care about saving Marzina, an 8-year-old from Bangladesh, who is currently seeking a sponsor.

The media likewise know that gargantuan disaster stories have to be correctly packaged to capture readers’ attention. There is an old, politically incorrect saying in newsrooms: How do you change a front-page story about massive flood devastation into a 50-word news brief buried inside the paper? Just add two words: ‘’In India.”

I was in a remote hotel last week and tripped across a news report from Deutsche Welle, Germany’s government-supported international network. With tens of thousands of Asians already confirmed dead, DW headlined the disappearance of four Germans in the tsunami. My immediate reaction was: Who cares about four Germans? Answer: The Germans care about the Germans. The Americans care about the Americans. And so on.

Europeans and others sometimes dismiss America’s ‘’overreaction” to the Sept. 11 attacks. Statistically speaking, the losses on 9/11 equalled those during a few hours of one of the European continent’s epic land battles. But the impact was felt all over the Eastern seaboard, and all over the country.

A man who lived a few houses down from me died on one of the airliners. Waiting in line to move my son’s belongings into his college dorm in New York City a year later, I met several families from New Jersey for whom the memory of the year-old attacks remained painful and dramatic. They hadn’t experienced an event, they had lived through a tragedy.

When my family returned home from our vacation on Saturday, we were greeted by a handwritten note from a friend, saying she may have lung cancer. One of my sons burst out crying. Her biopsy was yesterday; as of this writing we don’t know the results. For us, that’s a tragedy. The rest is news.

Call to mind, and then hold there for a moment, those in need of love and prayer

Lord in your mercy, hear my prayer.

Lord, I remember before you all the workers of the world: workers with hand or brain: workers in cities or fields: those who go forth to toil those who keep house: employers and employees: those who command and those who obey: those whose work is dangerous: those whose work is monotonous or mean: those who can find no work to do: those whose work is the service of the poor, or the healing of the sick, or the proclamation of the Gospel of Christ at home or in foreign places.

Continue to read reflectively a few verses each day of St Luke’s Passion account, which begins at chapter 22¹⁴. Imagine yourself into the story, be conscious of God with you.

PALM CROSSES

Next Sunday is Palm Sunday and the beginning of Holy Week. The therapeutic art of Palm Cross making will take place on Saturday the 8^th April, in the Supper Room, beginning at 10.00am. Do come along to help, it’s a good social occasion.

MEMORIAL WALL DEDICATION

We are sending out some invitations to the Memorial Wall Dedication Service on Sunday May 21^st, mainly to people whose loved one’s ashes are interred in the garden. If you know of anyone else who should be sent an individual invitation, please let us know by Wednesday.

MARKET-PLACE

The Editor of “Market-Place” a monthly Anglican newspaper has sent me ten copies of the March edition as a sample. Please help yourself to a copy and having read it return it for others to read. He has sent them presumably to attract possible subscribers and because he thinks that an article in it by your rector might be bait, as if you don’t get enough from me from pew-sheet, pulpit and Outreach!

BLOOD DONATIONS

There is information in the Narthex on Blood Donations. There is apparently a disturbing shortage of blood available to those in need. So do please seriously consider signing up to donate.

A.B.M. LADY DAY

The weather was lovely to travel to Wangaratta and it was a very successful day, with the pie stall raising $300.20and the raffle, our best ever $1,206.00. Our thanks to Mrs. June McKellar for her generous gift of a hand painted jug, this was won by Lyn Beaumont, the ticket sold by Heather Camm. Sincere thanks to everyone for buying and selling tickets, cooking and last but not least taking the time to travel to Wangaratta and work on the stall. Thanks again on behalf of A.B.M. Nola Brewer

MOTHERING SUNDAY BREAKFAST

Many thanks to those who organised the Breakfast for Mothering Sunday, and to Heather Pearson for her talk which unfortunately I didn’t hear because of the Dookie run. Thank you again for all who made simnel cake and enough posies even for the multitude at the 10.30 Baptisms!

The names of those in need of prayer need to be put on the list in the Narthex and signed for, if their permission has been given. If that permission is unobtainable, then only a Christian name should be used.
