When we look at the milkmaid pouring milk in Vermeer’s painting in the Rijksmuseum, we see - as for the first time - how beautiful is a humble stream of milk that pours from a jug, how supremely elegant is its trajectory, how subtle is the play of light upon it; but we understand simultaneously that the moment cannot last, indeed that part of its beauty is its very transience. Though not for long, perfection is indeed of this world. And this perception reconciles us to our existence, full of ugliness as it might otherwise be. If there are Vermeerian moments in our life - as there will be, if only we pay close enough attention - we shall reach serenity, at least intermittently.

After as happy and lovely a funeral as is ever possible for Marj Watts, on Tuesday afternoon, I visited my doctor. He removed the stitches from my wounded forehead expertly and painlessly, and then rendered the now healing gash less obvious with a little piece of skin-coloured, camouflaging plaster. With the black eye fading and the wound hardly noticeable, I can no longer swagger around fantasizing myself to be a pub-brawling, swashbuckling bruiser and revert, perforce, to the lily-white-handed scribe, cheeky, turn-the-other-cheek parson that I am called truly to be, boo hoo. It was good while it lasted.
Bishop in Council
Heather Fitzgerald and I whizzed off to Wangaratta that evening to attend Bishop in Council with the Bishop himself absent on long service leave in England. Bishop in Council meetings are not uninteresting, sometimes stimulating, now and then funny, usually worthwhile and occasionally infuriating. As usual this one spent more time upon the dioceses new schools and their financial woes than upon any other subject. We are assured that financial worries are normal in such schools until they are well established, and I am sure that this is so. We have to keep guaranteeing loans to them and considering grants, but by and large their future begins to look assured.
Selling diocesan jewels
The most interesting proposal, from the Registrar, was to sell Bishop’s Lodge upon the retirement of the present bishop, and with the proceeds buy a house more convenient to live in and less costly to maintain. The residue of the money raised by the sale of so fine a building could then be used to set up a bishopric endowment fund. He was flying a kite that I did my best to shoot down, though we have been asked seriously to consider the proposal before the next meeting. I hate the way that the church over the years, all over the country, has divested itself so many beautiful buildings and assets for filthy lucre. The Church is in the business of beauty, the beauty of holiness, sometimes extravagantly so, witness the anointing of Jesus with expensive oil of nard. The stripping of beautiful assets is often justified by expressions of shame at owning valuable and beautiful buildings and artefacts when there is so much poverty about. The bishop himself once expressed to me a little unease about the inappropriateness of living in such a lovely building, given the Gospel we preach. The Registrar offered a similar justification among others. I am not convinced, however, that the best way to love the poor and the ragged is to embrace poverty and don rags ourselves. Anyway, the motive for such actions is very rarely to give the money away, more usually it is a particularly myopic survival tactic. The closing of parishes all over the country illustrates the same depressing pattern, assets are sold off one by one to keep the show on the road until there is nothing to left to sell and then the parish is amalgamated with another until it dies, whereupon even the church itself is sold and that is that.
Attending to both young and old
Your clergy are aware that a greater proportion of our time is consumed in ministering to the ancient, dying and dead than to the young, vibrant and newborn and that the imbalance needs to be redressed. We do all our work with the elderly willingly and indeed find it rewarding, not least because in so many ways, the elderly, with a lifetime of experience and often hardship behind them, tend to be more interesting and characterful than the young. However, nursing home work, services and funerals shouldn’t dominate our lives and thanks to the help of some noble parishioners involved in pastoral care we have been relieved of a good deal of the nursing home visiting, and so have been able to turn our attention to how we manage baptisms in the parish, and to making more of the opportunities provided by them.
Baptism
There are those in our Church who adopt such a rigorist approach to baptism, that the parents of applicants are made to jump through so many hoops that only the devoutly devout and deeply committed can bring themselves to do so. In this parish we never, ever refuse to baptize anyone, but do now have a few mild and reasonable requirements that only the frivolous or essentially unbelieving could possibly baulk at. Parents must attend a 10.30am Sunday Children’s Church well before their child’s baptism, where they are introduced to the congregation in general and to a congregational sponsor in particular. They then, with the sponsor and any of the godparents available, are required to attend a Tuesday evening preparation session, where we talk the whole baptism business over and have a look at what bringing children up as Christians means. After the baptism they are visited by their sponsor with a package of material prepared by the Mothers’ Union and also an invitation to a port and coffee evening to share their photos of the baptism, enjoy a little church fellowship and to deepen their contact with the clergy, sponsors and the other families who had children baptized with them. If any of you are asked to be a sponsor (as many regulars at the 10.30 Eucharist are likely to be) please seriously consider agreeing! The task is not onerous, is usually good fun, vital to the future of our parish and helps make the baptism of infants what it ought to be for the good of both the church and the baptized. In short, it is a privilege.
Planned giving
One of the best excuses not to come to church that we can give to the faintly Christian, is to badger them about giving! In October, however, we will all of us be reminded that we are not paying our way and so need to look seriously at what we give to our church with a view hopefully to increase it. The campaign we are to use is home-run, by which I mean it involves no paying of thousands of dollars to professional fund-raisers. Nor does it involve visiting anyone, though those who do not respond to letters and brochures are phoned for a response. It is a scheme that worked well in my previous parish, largely for two reasons. Firstly the parish was an unstressed and happy one, as I think we are here. Secondly because it was well run and driven by a dynamic little Stewardship Committee as we hope to be here to. Please, when the time comes, greet the scheme positively and play your part in making it work.
Forgiveness
Some while ago now I preached a sermon at an ecumenical service in St Brendan’s on the subject of “forgiveness” . I was pleased last week when one of the doughty few who braved the cold to be at that service, rang me up for a copy of my words. As you all know by now I am a person who boasts his heroes and heroines and likes a phalanx of them behind me and around me to assist me in my little battles for truth, beauty and goodness. Most of my understanding of forgiveness comes from John Austin Baker, a hero of mine since I first read him over thirty years ago and then listened to him when he was Rector of St Margaret’s Westminster and a Canon of the Abbey. He later became Bishop of Salisbury and is now retired. However, just this week I came upon another lovely passage on the subject of God’s forgiveness from a different old hero of mine, Austin Farrer, an Oxford Don, Anglican Priest, theologian and philosopher. It comes from his book of sermons: “Said or Sung”:
God forgives me with the compassion of his eyes, but my back is turned to him. I have been told that he forgives me, but I will not turn and have the forgiveness, not though I feel the eyes on my back. God forgives me, for he takes my head between his hands and he turns my face to his to make me smile at him. And though I struggle and hurt those hands, for they are human, though divine - human and scarred by nails - though I hurt them, they do not let go until he has smiled me into smiling: and that is the forgiveness of God.
The opposite of forgiveness is summed up well by the old Chinese proverb: Whoever opts for revenge should dig two graves.

Members of the Evening Guild thank all those who supported us in any way at all with the conduct of our very successful garage sale. There were many ‘extras’:- men who moved tables and heavy items, people who contributed items for sale, others who cheerfully ferried loads of goods, people from other churches and organisations who gladly helped to organize things and, at the finish, to clear up. All this assistance was greatly appreciated. We thank, too, all those who attended and bought goods from our well- stocked tables and purchased raffle tickets. The work of fund-raising is much more enjoyable when so many people willingly join in. The Sale itself raised $1570.00 and the Raffle $1010.00, a total of $2580.00. Thank you all. An opportunity to meet other parents and to enjoy activities with your children in a loving and caring environment.
SUNDAY ON SATURDAY
Our first Sunday Eucharist occurs on Saturday evening at 6.30pm. This provides those who have commitments on Sunday nonetheless to fulfil their baptism and Christian commitment. The Saturday night service is held in the Lady Chapel, is quiet, peaceful and devotional.
HOSPITAL & AGED CARE VISITORS
The bi monthly meeting of ALL Hospital and Aged Care Visitors takes place on Monday 3rd of July at 1.00pm.
