It has been a difficult week for me with our Associate Priest away at a much-needed Retreat, a couple of funerals and almost a day taken out with meetings in Wangaratta. Rachel cheered me up by sending me a little cluster of literary haikus, culled from a book she had borrowed. I don’t much like haikus, unless they are cleverly taking the mick out of someone or something, as these most successfully are:

Last week’s pew sheet had a blank final page. How out of character for a man like me to leave a page unspattered with words. It was, of course, a mistake. I thought I had filled eight pages as usual, but hadn’t. It troubles me to think that what I would have written, or reproduced, is unlikely now ever, ever to appear.
The Bring a Friend Sunday last week saw some good visitor friends in our pews, though not as many as we had hoped. On reflection, however, I realise that the only sort of friend likely to respond readily to an invitation to church, would need to be a member of another church. Nearly all confirmed non-churchgoers are far more self-justifyingly and self-righteously obdurate in their conviction that “you don’t have to go to church to be a Christian” than we churchgoers are in our conviction that you do indeed need to attend in order to be the genuine article! Thank you to those who did come and enjoy our enjoyment, and also to those who possibly risked friendships by inviting the unwilling and the disinclined.
The sheepish verse and pictures in this pew sheet relate to the Gospel for today. This Sunday is “Good Shepherd Sunday”. Charles Causley’s verse is a parody of the hymn we sing before the Gospel today. It was a school favourite in the days of my youth, but like so much of one’s treasured past it has been disdainfully discarded by the trendy compilers of our new hymn book.
Of all the hymns in the new book, perhaps the most fatuous is the one with a refrain that really does invite parody:

It was a Good Fri-, Good Fri-, Good Friday,
It was a Good Fri-, Good Friday,
Perhaps we could sing it as a refrain at the forthcoming “Men’s Breakfast” as a tribute to our sausage, bacon and egg fry-up man John Griffin. Mind you, one of our most perceptive and thoughtful parishioners did object to “Onward Christian Soldiers” last week as being “militaristic”. It is a criticism with which I do not concur because it is only analogical, we are urged to march as to war, not literally to war. If, through political correctness, we have to remove from our public discourse all military and hunting imagery, then the Bible, Beowulf, the Iliad, Morte’Arthur, War and Peace and three quarters of world literature is doomed!
The hardest verse to stomach in “Onward Christian Soldiers” is difficult because it tells a lie, not because it is militaristic:
Like a mighty army
moves the Church of God;
brothers we are treading
where the saints have trod;
we are not divided,
all one body we,
one in hope and calling,
one in charity.
We are, in fact, divided, we are not one body, nor are we “one in charity”. We can only sing such a verse as the expression of an ideal towards which to strive. The whole hymn has been much parodied, the verse above as follows:
Like a mighty tortoise
Moves the church of God.
Brothers we are treading,
Where we've always trod.
We are much divided,
Many bodies we,
Having different doctrines,
But little charity.
It seems important to me that the old and favourite hymns and tunes, that have enriched and sustained the devotion of faithful Anglicans down through the years, be kept current and familiar. The worst have to be discarded, certainly, but not to be replaced by paltry choruses that are best characterized as religious nursery rhymes. There are some choruses with fine tunes and acceptable words and that do not disgrace the vocal chords of an adult. They can be brought gladly into the repertoire to deepen and enrich it, but lets be proud of our heritage and pep or jazz it up a little, rather than discard it.
I received a letter from a specialist making an appointment for me this week. It gave me a date and time and then added: “Please note it is payment on the day of $120 ($62.95 back from Medicare) and $75.00 for aged or disability pensioners.” I suppose you could make out a case for this being courteous in that it warns me of how much I am going to be charged. To me it seemed crudely and rudely mercenary.
IN PRAISE OF MANURE
Under a shearing shed shovelling muck,
Crouching and grunting and down on his luck,
An Anglican Rector discovered the way
To keep cash-hungry bishop and diocese at bay.
The offertory plate every Sunday was light,
But he didn’t despair at the pitiful sight,
Or grumble or shout at his faithful few,
He flopped to his knees, although not in a pew!
Under a shed he got down to his praying,
In sweat and in effort, in action not saying,
And so there were filled lots of offertory sacks,
Dozens and dozens piled high in great stacks.
This wasn’t accomplished completely alone,
He didn’t perspire and pray on his own,
Parishioners too came to kneel in the dung,
To pray with their muscle and not with their tongue.
In Carngham they did it without their dear Rector,
Hundreds of sacks from this hard-working sector,
And also in Wallinduc’s drizzle and mud
Where the hand of Sue Robertson split and poured blood,
But still she continued, with hard working Netta,
Inspiring the men to do better and better!
So the Parish of Skipton was solvent on dung
And happy its Rector, dung’s praise to have sung.
For the substance is wholesome, in no way obscene
Its smell is not noxious, but pungent and clean,
And how well it dissolves a poor church’s debts
And eases a Rector’s dire worries and frets.
Hurrah then for muck, it is glorious stuff,
A Rector and church simply can’t have enough.
Like roses and lilies, they need it to thrive,
It keeps mother church sweetly fragrant and live!

SUFFER LITTLE CHILDREN
A small boy was sent to bed by his father. Five minutes later he called out,”Da-ad....” “What is it?” “I’m thirsty. Can you bring me a drink of water?” “No, You have had your chance. Lights out.” Five minutes later: “Da-aaaad....” “WHAT?” “I’m THIRSTY. Can I have a drink of water? I told you NO! If you ask again, I’ll have to spank you!!” Five minutes later......”Daaaa-aaaad....” “WHAT!” “When you come in to spank me, can you bring a drink of water?”
An exasperated mother, whose son was always getting into mischief, finally asked him: “How do you expect to get into Heaven?” The boy thought it over and said, “Well, I’ll run in and out and in and out and keep slamming the door until St. Peter says, ‘For Heaven’s sake, Dylan, come in or stay out!’”
One summer evening during a violent thunderstorm a mother was tucking her son into bed. She was about to turn off the light when he asked with a tremor in his voice, “Mummy, will you sleep with me tonight?” The mother smiled and gave him a reassuring hug? “I can’t dear,” she said. “I have to sleep in Daddy’s room.” A long silence was broken by his shaky little voice: “The big sissy.”
MEN’S BREAKFAST
There is a Mens’s Breakfast this Saturday, and with winter all but upon us it will be a good one: sausage, egg, bacon, the works! The noble will be at the Eucharist in the Lady Chapel at 8.00am and will join the rest in the Supper Room at 8.30am for breakfast. The guest speaker is David Day, his subject: “Landcare”. Sign up in the narthex, so we know how many to cater for. Try to persuade a friend along.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The first of the training sessions for those who wish to be a part of the referral service that is being started by the Social Responsibilities Group is on this Thursday 11th of May from 1.00pm to 4.00pm. Anyone interested in being a part of this invaluable project and so interested in the training sessions, have a word with the clergy, Heather Pearson, Andrea Fisher, Charlotte Brewer, or Heather Camm. So far we have very few names indeed! Most of those who help in the Office on Mondays should volunteer. We have a large number of requests from needy folk for help, and we hope to be able to refer truly needy folk to expert counsellors and advisors who have offered their services to us for nothing or at cut rates.
FINE MUSIC
On Saturday 13th May at 7.30pm the Turaton Music Company presents: Australia: Land of the Rainbow Gold - The Songs and Stories of Australia in our hall at $15.00 per person which includes a delicious supper. Their show last year was truly excellent, so do support this function which through Turaton’s generosity also supports us. Bev Condon will be selling tickets after the 8.30 and 10.30 services. Tickets are also available at the door.

RICE STRAW MULCH
The Shepparton High School Chaplaincy Committee is selling bales of premium Rice Straw for mulch, as a fund raiser. It contains no weeds, takes two years to break down and is environmentally friendly to plants and wildlife. The bales weigh approximately 22kg, are 36 x 40 x 82cms, and one bale will cover about seven square metres. Orders can be placed by phoning Mrs Joan Guymer on 587219056 or Mrs Margaret Watters on 58213136 by the 18th of May. The bales can be picked up at Ford Reserve on Saturday 27th May 2006 between 9.00am and noon.
CHAPLAINCY ANNUAL MEETING
The Annual meeting of the Shepparton High School Chaplaincy Committee will be held on Thursday 18th May at the VCE Centre, Shepparton High School beginning at 7.30pm. The guest speaker will be the Revd. Moss Arnot, Chaplaincy Field Support Manager. Supper will be served at the conclusion of the meeting and all are welcome to attend.
THE SOIREE
On the 28th of July we hold another “Soiree” for which we need plenty of singing and musical items, skits, recitations etc..... Do put your name down on the list in the Narthex if you would like to participate. Don’t be reticent or modest. We need you.
