FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

QUOTES OF THE WEEK
Britain, Europe and the United States are decadent societies in a special sense of that word. They have traded in an old morality that served them well throughout their civilisation for a new, experimental quasi-morality. The old morality had well-known virtues, courage, love, fairness, honesty and prudence. The new ‘virtues’ are equality, anti-discrimination, environmental concern, self-affirmation, a ‘caring’ attitude, and a critical mindset. The old were genuine virtues; they required specific behaviours of individuals. The new are quasi or bogus virtues. Some, such as equality, are political policies rather than features of personal conduct. Environmentalism is an arena in which virtue may be exercised not a virtue in itself. Transparency in business is a way of revealing virtue not a virtue. Some are slogans: they make rhetorical appeals to moral indignations. Others such as self-affirmation would once have been regarded as a vice..... Review of “Decadence: The Passing of Personal Virtue and its Replacement by Political and Psychological Slogans” by Digby Anderson, 2005
Knowing God without knowing our own wretchedness makes for pride. Knowing our own wretchedness without knowing God makes for despair. Knowing Jesus Christ strikes the balance, because he shows us both God and our own wretchedness.
Blaise Pascal, “Pensees”
GENTLE BOMBERSAt a child custody case the judge couldn’t decide which parent he should grant full custody to. So he asked the little boy, “Would you like to live with your mother?” “No,” said the boy, “Why not?” asked the judge. “Because she beats me.” The judge said, “Alright, then, you will go to live with your father. “Oh no,” cried the boy, “He beats me, too.” Puzzled, the judge asked, “Well then, who do you want to live with?” “I want to live in Essendon, with the Bombers.” “Why,” asked the judge. “They never beat anybody.”
CALMING THE STORM
Andrew Neaum
One of the deans I worked with in Harare Cathedral was a loud, larger than life, super-confident, rude, know-all. When you got really to know him, however, he was a timorous wreck of a man, crying out for acceptance, rejected as a newborn infant by his parents and so adopted, and then rejected by his adoptive parents, doubly rejected.
We are not what we seem
Most people put up a front, declare themselves to be other than they are. A cheerful countenance too often hides great grief and sadness. A show of confidence frequently hides uncertainty and unsureness, The psychologist Alfred Adler bequeathed to the world the concept of the “inferiority complex”, maintaining that a sense of inferiority classically manifests itself in superiority and bombast,
The dithering, indecisive J Alfred Prufrock of T S Eliot’s famous poem, talks of there being time to prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet; It is something we nearly all do. We are not what we seem.
Fascinating relationships
Which, in many ways, is what makes human relationships fascinating, they are voyages of discovery. The person who says: “What you see is what you get,” if he tells the truth, which usually he doesn’t, is a bore, is not worth knowing, for there’s nothing to discover.
Relationships often break up, however, when the voyage of discovery reveals, at best, someone very ordinary and unremarkable, at worst, someone contemptible, cruel, crass or whatever.
I suspect that one of the reasons that I, in my writing, conversation and sermons celebrate the ordinary and the unremarkable, and attempt to find beauty and good and God in them, is because all relationships, be they with God, or fellow human beings or even mere things, if they are to last, depend upon us celebrating ordinariness and unremarkableness.
Everything, everyone, at bottom, when known, when possessed, is unremarkable, ordinary, unexciting, boring even. And yet is still, for those with the eyes to see, wonderful, that is, full of wonder, full of the divine. It is a case of bread and wine, and yet Jesus too, you see.
Putting up a front
Consider other people’s vaunted success and happiness, as revealed in their Christmas circular letters which, too often, as well as containing useful family news, and keeping us up to date, are so full of successful family achievement and happiness, that they make us feel totally inadequate, leave us depressed at all the failures and mess in our own life.
Dad with no promotion, and no prospect of it, disillusioned, simply coping, drinking rather too much beer. Mum hanging on to her sanity by the skin of her teeth, driven to distraction by rebellious, idle, intractable kids who are addicted to videos, idleness and revolting company, and are rude and uncooperative.
From the outside, judged by the public front presented in things like circular letters, other peoples lives and families seem too good to be true. Our own, in comparison, too bad to be true.
The real truth, though, lies in one’s own family and life. The public front is usually just that, a front, a lie. As Henry Thoreau, the sage of Walden Pond remarked,”Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.” The truth about the lives of others often only becomes publicly apparent and obvious, with the sudden eruption of a crisis: divorce, separation, desertion, or even murder.
Peace, be still
I overstate things, but there is a lot of misery and desperation in ordinary daily life, for most of us, and at times it seems all but to engulf us, begins to blow a gale. The waves start breaking into life’s boat so that it is almost swamped. Sanity, order, purpose, love, our religion, our Lord, are in the stern, head on a cushion asleep.
If we have any sense we wake them up and say:’Master, do you not care? We are going down!’And the master wakes up, rebukes the wind, and says to the sea, ‘Quiet now! Be calm!’
Sanity, order, purpose, love, our religion, our Lord, return. The wind drops. All is calm again. And our Lord says to us,’Why are you so frightened? How is it that you have no faith?’And we respond with awe and say to one another,’Who can this be? Even the wind and the sea obey him.’
Surviving without shipwreck
Would that it were quite so easy! Would that God and faith could so easily bring peace, calm, tranquillity. Would that there was no crucifixion. Would that the road was wide, winding and gentle, not steep and narrow. Would that there was no crucifixion. Would that it were quite so easy.
But although it is indeed not that easy, sanity, order, purpose, love, our religion, our Lord, cannot be allowed to remain asleep on a cushion in the background of life if we are to cope at all adequately with the inevitable sad storms that erupt in life.
Faith, admittedly, isn’t a tranquillizing sea-sick pill, it doesn’t always ensure a smooth passage, but with the Lord sane and strong beside us, rather than asleep behind us, storms, if they are not always stilled and calmed, are all the better survived without shipwreck.
Life without the Lord, without the sanity of moral absolutes, and of obligations and duties willingly shouldered, without the primacy of sacrificial love, without reference to, dialogue with, and love of the Lord, is a wild mess and storm of moral relativism, is purposeless, ruled by the ego, governed by greed, mammon, revenge, spite, hatred.
Love is temporary and relative, the loved one discarded, aborted, put to death when useless. Life without the Lord awake and active is a wild, insane, frightening and desperate mess.
And so all the pious little cliches muttered by the simple minded, like ‘say your prayers’,’know the Lord’, ‘know your bible’,’have faith’, ‘take your Church seriously’, ‘sacrifice, attend Church regularly’,’don’t be half-hearted’, ‘believe’, are all ways of saying a simple and profound truth: ‘Wake up, and properly wake up the Lord in the background of your life, or, by God, you’ll drown!’
CELEBRATING THE ORDINARY
Celebrating the ordinary and commonplace is not an exclusively religious or Christian necessity. There follow two lovely pieces of verse that do so without any reference to faith at all, the first is by Wendy Cope and is a favourite of Rachel, Margaret and me. It comes from her “Serious Concerns” published by Faber and Faber. The second is by Roger McGough who’s collected works I am revelling in at the moment, before tackling his new autobiography. The running together of words and the sparse punctuation are idiosyncrasies of his not mistakes of mine! His “Collected Poems” is published by Penguin.....
The Orange
At lunchtime I bought a huge orange -
The size of it made us all laugh.
I peeled it and shared it with Robert and Dave -
They got quarters and I had a half.
And that orange, it made me so happy,
As ordinary things often do
Just lately. The shopping. A walk in the park,
This peace and contentment. It’s new.
The rest of the day was quite easy.
I did all the jobs on my list
And enjoyed them and had some time over.
I love you. I’m glad I exist.
Happiness
Lying in bed ofa weekdaymorning
Autumn
and the trees
none the worse for it.
Youve just got up
to make tea toast and a bottle
leaving pastures warm
for me to stretch into
in his cot
the littlefella
outsings the birds
Plenty of honey in the cupboard.
Nice.
CONGRATULATIONS

Baptism
Also to Charleigh George, daughter of Leigh and Lisa, who is to be baptized at 12.15pm today, with Dorothy Cook as congregational sponsor.
JOY
He who binds to himself a joy
Doth the winged life destroy;
But he who kisses the joy as it flies
Lives in Eternity’s sun rise.
William Blake
BAPTISMS THIS MONTH
To be baptized on the 4th Sunday of this month and hopefully present with us at the 10.30 service today are: Areaka Bamblett, Noah Jaye Mason, Jidan Robert Spark and Jackson Bryce Collins. I shall be introducing them to their congregational sponsors during the service today, their sponsors are: Christine Jones, John & Jenny Pleming, Sandra Simonis & Charlotte Brewer, to whom many thanks.
THE PRAYER LIST
A new prayer list has started this week. Place those names of those for whom prayer is desired on the new list for July which is on the narthex table. Names identifiable by surname should only be used with permission.
SURELY NOT TRUE
I was told, the other day, that there are some folk who come regularly to the 10.30am Eucharist on Sunday who, on noticing that the church is likely to be crowded with baptism visitors, turn round and go back home! If this is true, then how deplorable it is. Yes indeed, the guests of some baptism families might be unfamiliar with church, have no idea as to how to behave in church and so intrude upon our private and comfortable devotions. I remember once at Wodonga collecting empty tinnies from under the back pew after a particularly wild baptism, but so what? It is still wonderful to have our too-small-by-far band of regulars swollen into a multitude, and you never know, a warm welcome, genuine charity, broad minds and heartfelt tolerance might contribute to a conversion or two, or at least a return to the fold. We are an inclusive, not an exclusive church and it is only one Sunday a month that baptisms occur. Bapt-isms are to be looked forward to, treasured and assiduously attended so that the newly baptized meet a good proportion of their new family and are given a warm welcome indeed.
CONFIRMATION CLASSES
Junior Confirmation Classes start on Tuesday the 18th of July at 4.00pm.
WANTED - TICKET SELLERS
We are once more at that time of year when we are requesting help to sell raffle tickets for the Parish’s major raffle. There is a list of times and places which have been allocated to us on the narthex table. Would you please help by placing your name by at least one of these times. Thank you Heather Carlyon
SUNDAY ON SATURDAY
Our first Sunday Eucharist actually occurs on Saturday evening at 6.30pm. This provides those unable to attend on Sunday nonetheless to fulfil their baptism and Christian commitment.
EVENING GUILD RAFFLE WINNERS
The fortunate winners of the highly successful Evening Guild raffle are as follows: 1st Leila Bedford, 2nd J. Phillips, 3rd P. Allen, 4th Stella Hall, 5th Barb Brown, 6th Val Jones.
SOIREE
The “Soiree” on the 28th of July, if last year is anything to go by, will be an excellent and most enjoyable night out, during which some surprising talent, much humour and great fun will be in evidence. We are still a little short of items, so please consider putting your name down to sing, play an instrument, dance, act, recite or whatever. It is conceivable, just, that talent scouts will be present and so this could be the beginning of celebrity for the adventurous and talented. Certainly the audience will be appreciative, supportive and forgiving. There is a list in the Narthex for the names of those with the panache, courage and gall to present an item or two. We need a final list of names for the program.
OUTREACH TIME
Outreach time looms - articles and items of interest are invited and need to be in by the 16th July please. Ron Rose
PRAYER LINE
The name of anyone in need of emergency and immediate prayer should be phoned to Hilary Akers who will then activate the “Prayer Line”. Her phone: 58314267
