THROUGH THE GATES
A gold prospector fell down a forgotten mineshaft in the Buckland Valley and woke up dead. Dusting himself down, he looked up to see the shimmering loveliness of heaven’s gates, but he was concerned that St Peter appeared to be shaking his head. “Sorry, nothing personal, but there’s absolutely no room in heaven for another gold prospector. We have got our quota.” The prospector was momentarily nonplussed. Then he got an idea. He yelled out: “GOLD DISCOVERED IN HELL!” Whereupon some hundreds of prospectors rushed through the Pearly Gates and headed south. “Very ingenious,” said St Peter admiringly. “You may now enter.” “No thanks,” said the prospector, already heading in the opposite direction. “Where the hell are you going?” asked St Peter. “Down there. After all, there might be some truth in the rumour.”
WELL HARDLY EVER
Never throw a brick at a drownin’ man
Outside a grocery store -
Always throw him a bar of soap -
And he’ll wash himself ashore.

THE SHIP OF FOOLS
We are overloaded with information. We listen to and watch far too much news. It gives us a distorted view of reality because it is imbalanced. We drown in tragedy, doom and disaster.
Jesus told us that God knows the number of hairs on our head and regards the fall of every single sparrow. So nowadays do we thanks to television, radio, newspapers and the web. God can handle it without losing belief in himself, we cannot.
I these days tend to get my news almost solely from the Web. A ten minute early morning riff through the headlines of the BBC, ABC, The Australian and The Age. I read a couple of full articles only and then move on to better things, like writing the pewsheet or a sermon.
There are lots and lots and lots and lots of Christian Web sites too, most of them to be avoided at all costs. However, the irreverent and liberal site called “The Ship of Fools” is well worth a regular look at. In it there is a regular short column by Stephen Tomkins entitled:
Loose Canon
Golden moments from the pages of Church history
We are told that “There’s a thin line between saintliness and madness. In this regular column, Stephen Tomkins tells the stories of people who have crossed the line in both directions. Here are inspiring tales of holy folly that laugh in the face of human wisdom – and also breathtaking examples of religious stupidity that fly in the face of common sense. Which is which? Well, dear surfer, that’s up to you to decide.” His latest columns follows:
Agatha & Azenor: bosom buddies
According to early medieval versions of the legend of St Agatha, she was tortured to death for her faith after rejecting the attentions of a Roman consul, in the process of which her breasts were cut off. (They were restored to her by St Peter.)
She was consequently depicted in medieval artwork as carrying them on a plate, but then things got a bit confused, and misidentification of these items by the public led to her becoming the patron saint of bellmakers, bakers and volcanic eruptions.
Which brings us on to Princess Azenor and St Bunoc. When, in the 5th century, the King of Brest, France, was attacked by a snake, his daughter Azenor sought the advice of a nearby (presumably very nearby) wise man. Being a wise man, he told her to strip and smear her breast with olive oil and milk, an infallible ruse for alluring snakes. When the snake left the king and attached himself to her irresistible bosom, she should cut it off, he told her.
The snake fell for the Princess of Brest’s booby trap, and the King was saved. But the ungrateful so-and-so turned against his daughter, for reasons which to be frank I haven’t quite got to the bottom of, but I think had something to do with a wicked stepmother and an unexpected pregancy.
He threw her into the sea, shut up in a barrel. There she gave birth to a boy, Budoc, and her bosom was miraculously restored. Thus wondrously equipped she breasted the billows, feeding the baby and steered by angels and saints till after five months they landed in Ireland. Budoc grew up to become a missionary bishop back in Brittany. True story(!)
HEBREW BEER
OK, we’re jealous. When did you last hear of Baptist Bitter? Or Pentecostal Pilsener? Or even Lutheran Lager? Like, never. So if you’re in search of a truly divine beer, you’ll have to cross the denominational divides big time, and head off to He’brew for “the best (and only) Jewish beer in America”.
He’brew, “the chosen beer”, offers four different brews. There’s Genesis Ale; there’s Messiah Bold (“the beer you’ve been waiting for”, ha ha); there’s Genesis 10:10 (brewed with pomegranate juice); there’s Monumental Jewbelation, and there’s even a beer in celebration of Jewish comedian Lenny Bruce. “This Chanukah, candles won’t be the only thing getting lit!” says one of the brewery’s many inspired sales blurbs.
He’brew: a beer so blessed, you’ll wish you were circumcised. Click here for the He’brew website. From “Gadgets for God” - Ship of Fools - comments on real products.
TEN PLAGUES FINGER PUPPETS
“This little boil went to market. This little locust stayed at home. And this little plague sneaks into bedrooms in the middle of the night and mercilessly smites children of your age – on purely racial grounds. Goodnight, darling. Sweet dreams.”
For just $16.95 you can scare the shibboleth out of your first-born with this inspiring set of finger puppets. All 10 plagues sent to Pharoah’s Egypt are here, including flies, thunder, hail, gnats, darkness. As the sales blurb puts it: “There is NO DOUBT about it. KIDS LOVE the story of the 10 Plagues... Here is just the right thing to keep your children interested in the Haggadah... and GUARANTEE they don’t fall asleep...”

IMPORTANT GATHERING
At the next meeting of Wangaratta’s Synod we are likely to decide to what extent our diocese is to move in to the mainstream of Anglicanism in Australia and to what extent, on the issue of the ordination of women, we are to hedge ourselves about with special concessions, privileges and safety clauses for those who are opposed to women priests. On the afternoon of Sunday the 18th of Feb, at 2.00 pm in Euroa, there is a Pre-Synod Meeting to articulate and listen to different views, inform, discuss and consider. The meeting is to be chaired by an experienced person from outside of our diocese and it would be good if as many of us as possible attend.
LENT COURSES
Our Lenten Course this year comes from Brisbane and promises to be worthwhile. Please sign up now so that we know how much material to order. There will be two sessions every Wednesday, starting on the 28th of February. The first will be at 2.00 pm, the second, preceded by a Eucharist starting at 6.00pm and then light Lenten fare at 7.30 pm.
MUSIC
On Wednesdays we have begun a practice for musicians who sing and play at the 10.30am Eucharist. We start at 5.30 for about an hour and anyone with a good voice or able to play an instrument competently is welcome to attend. The music we hope to sing is lighter and more likely to be in a more modern idiom than that sung at the 8.30am Eucharist.
SERVERS PRACTICE
There is to be a Servers Practice this Thursday 15th of February at 4.15pm.
THANK YOU
Alan Tattersall has provided us with the large cabinet for our electronic equipment in the Church and spent a huge amount of time painting it, fitting it and revamping our equipment. He has also fitted an MP3 player provided by John Pleming, to enable music to be played during the day as necessary. So if you visit the church and hear quiet and lovely music playing, you are not hearing the angelic choir, but are most definitely a recipient of Grace which has found you by way of the hard work and ingenuity of Alan and the generosity of John. Thank you to them both.
ROSTERS ON THE WEB
If you wonder whether you are rostered for any duty on Sunday and cannot find last week’s pewsheet, you can always have recourse to the Web. The text of the pewsheet is put on the web each week usually on Friday or Saturday. When we have finalised the rosters we might well put them up in their own right. The texts of all pewsheets since October 2003 are all available on the Web, the address is on the front page of this pewsheet.
CONFIRMATION 2007
We would like to identify all those wishing to be confirmed well before Easter. Squeezing in to a course at the last moment is not likely to be countenanced this year. Names to the clergy please.
JERUSALEM
This Thursday Feb 15th at 7.30 in the Narthex, there is the second of the Power-point presentation of “Historic sights of Jerusalem”. All are welcome, and at no cost too!
BAPTISM SPONSORS
If the baptisms held in our churches are to bear the fruit that they ought, we need to integrate, support and encourage the families of those baptised as much as we possibly can. With this in view your clergy have started a congregational sponsorship scheme which needs volunteers. The more the merrier, to be effective. This is not too onerous a task to undertake! If we have a good long list of willing folk it needn’t be all that frequent either, once or twice a year only. Sign up in the Narthex please or have a word with one of the clergy.

SHEPPARTON AT SYNOD
We have been asked to present at Synod a view of parish life here at Shepparton. If we consent to doing so we will need digital photographs of every licit activity undertaken in the parish for a power point presentation. Photos of Children’s Church activities, Grief Support gatherings, Pastoral Care rumination, Gardening Team compostings, Guild fracas, Vestry contretemps and so on and so on. If you are a digital camera buff, then photo all you can and eventually either email the photos to the Parish Office or download to the Office Computer when Heather is present to password you in.
