NOT AN IRISH JOKE
The Englishman, the Scotsman and the Australian were trying to get into the Olympic Games without paying. The Englishman got a long stick and sharpened the end to a point. He went to the gate and said, ‘David Mitchell, England, javelin.’ He was allowed to enter. The Scot got a tennis ball, rubbed off the fluff and went up to the gate. ‘Sandy McGregor, Scotland,’ he said, ‘shot putt!’ He too was allowed to enter. The Australian found a scrap of barbwire left behind by the building contractors and said, ‘Bluey Morgan, Australia, fencing.’
YES FATHER! NO FATHER!
Andrew Neaum
Wherever people get together for any purpose or length of time, you have politics. Even in this noble parish of Shepparton there are politics. Who calls the tune? Who has that person’s ear? How are we to cope with the Women’s Guild? What is the best way to get our way on this, on that and on the other?
In fact church politics are often convoluted, and sometimes very nasty. This can shock people, but when you have done and said all, the Church is as much part and parcel of human society as was our incarnate Christ, and so this is only to be expected. One always hopes that in the Church things are a little above the level of secular politics. Sadly this is not always so. Wherever you have a gathering of people you have politics.
Power politics
It is hardly surprising then that even among the disciples there seem to have been political tensions. James and John wanted to be top dogs, or their mother wanted them to be so.
The disciples are a shadowy group of people. We are uncertain of all of their names and we know utterly nothing about some of them. Only in the case of St Peter do we have any real knowledge of his character, and also, though to a lesser degree, of James and John. “Boanerges” was their nickname, the “Sons of Thunder”. Apparently they were a volatile and possibly pushy pair of brothers.
Jesus seems to have been able to hold and wield authority well. The only recorded real problem he appears to have had with his disciples was their dullness of understanding. They didn’t get the message, they misunderstood his teaching.
The mere fact that this is recorded is a measure of its authenticity. It must come from the disciples themselves, and they would hardly pass on such uncomplimentary information unless, most emphatically, it was true.
There was also a problem with Judas Iscariot of course, but that seems more than likely to have been a part of the misunderstanding problem. He simply couldn’t understand forgiveness and love as authentic and effective political strategy, nor disaster as being victory. So he tried to push for a more commonplace political outcome.
Last first, first last
Jesus’ understanding of authority was very hard for anyone to comprehend, let alone Judas. In St Matthew’s Gospel, just before the passage about James and John attempting to be first among the disciples, Jesus utters his famous aphorism: The last shall be first and the first last. This shows a fine sense of irony indeed. The last shall be first the first last we read, and then go on immediately to hear of James and John, with their mother’s connivance, or at her instigation, making a bid to be first not last, boss not worker, master not servant!
This last shall be first understanding of authority, seems to have been truly central to Jesus’ teaching. Think of St John’s strange account of the Last Supper and of Jesus’ washing of his disciples’ feet then. He really did teach and live out himself, the master being the servant and the servant master. Remember too how he suggested that to sit at the bottom of the table, wins more honour than to sit at the top.
Kissing the bishop’s ring
The reason that in Church processions the most important person walks last, is an echo of this understanding. But there is irony here too. Because the first who is placed symbolically last in church processions, that is the bishop, too often in reality is in fact anything but last. He wears imperial purple, lives in a house often termed a palace and is surrounded by lackeys, kissers of his ring, and folk who call him “My Lord.....” a term which, although deriving from human nobility, seems close to blasphemous to anyone soaked in scriptural terminology.
Not all bishops, needless to say, let authority go to their head or sit on their dignity as readily as on their cathedra. I love the story of the bishop who, if anyone suggested that they would like to kiss his ring, informed them that they were most welcome to do so, and that he kept it in his back pocket.
Authority, however, does very easily go to the head, leads to hubris, overweening pride and the blasphemy of what I like to call “God-almighty-ness”.
We see it in politicians, in clergy, in the work place, even in the home. Yet how right Jesus is. The only truly effective person in authority is the one who sees himself as servant.
Potty titles
The trappings of authority: crowns, sceptres, ministerial limousines, huge salaries, privileges, outrageous and self-awarded superannuation schemes, or even potty titles like “The honourable Minister”, “My Lord”, Right Reverend, Venerable, Reverend and Father, are all sickening unless, unasked for or demanded. They rest happily, though always faintly ridiculously, only upon true and authentic servants of all. On men or woman truly of the people.
In secular society, sadly, it is not Christlike insight and humility that keep us free from tyranny and god-almightiness in our politicians. It is more our inherited and hard won tradition of an independent judiciary and the rule of law. In the Church it is the example of the Gospel’s Jesus. A man of authority who did not ask for authority’s titles, appurtenances, privileges and perks. Called “Lord” because he was so authoritatively humble, “Rabbi” because so authoritatively a teacher.
Authority granted, not asked for
In our daily lives any authority we wield, be it as parent, grandparent, spouse or in the workplace, needs to be Jesus’ model of the loving, last-as-first, servant-as-master sort, if it is to be lastingly effective.
Authority has to be earned not imposed, granted not asked for to be lastingly effective. It needs to be awarded out of respect for love and service rendered. Any respect I gather as priest from my parishioners will grow less out of any titles bestowed upon me, or even abilities I might possess, than from my love and service and respect for you all. So this little article is addressed more to myself than to anyone else!
A Prayer
Lord God, help us to be Christlike in authority and in the living of our lives to be people happy at the bottom of the table, washers of other people’s feet and helpers and servants of others. May we never sit upon our dignity, or demand respect and deference but rather, in disdaining both, to earn them.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
You frequently read that the mass murders in Iraq are entirely the fault of Messrs Bush and Blair, but it is not necessary to believe in the wisdom of their policy to see that nothing they have done actually compels the planting of bombs amidst poor Iraqis by their fellow-countrymen, and that therefore the people who do so are morally responsible for their evil deeds. If they were not responsible for them, they would not be human beings at all, but mere automata, things to be administered rather than sentient beings with inalienable rights. Thus the tendency to understand all in order to forgive all, upon which so many liberals pride themselves, rapidly transmutes into authoritarianism of the most ferocious, indeed totalitarian, kind.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS
A lovely little Lenten opportunity is the devotional exercise known as “Stations of the Cross”. Pictures of the 14 different stations , you might have noticed, are placed round the walls of the church and a reflection and prayer are said at each one. This short devotion takes place each Wednesday during Lent after morning tea at about 11.15. All are welcome.

MOTHERING SUNDAY
Mothering Sunday is next Sunday and it marks the halfway point of Lent. In this time of drought we are going to be especially short of flowers for the little posies given to mothers. Please bring as many posy-suitable flowers you can to the hall on Friday or before 10.00am on Saturday.
This year to mark Mothering Sunday there is a Bring and Share Lunch, beginning at 12.00 noon. As well as being Mothering Sunday it is also Refreshment Sunday, and so even the fasting break their fast and tuck in. In the Narthex is a list of what sort of food you plan to bring to share and for roughly how many.
What we are after is: Quiches, Chicken, Salads or sweets. We hope that folk from both the 8.30 and 10.30 Sunday Eucharists will be in attendance. Please sign up and do not miss a happy church family event. The Guest Speaker will be Dr Ursula Russell.

INTERESTING SPEAKERS FOR ABM
On Wednesday the 14th March we have two ABM missionaries visiting us. They are Sister Doreen who has been working with abused mothers and children for the last 15 years in Melanesia, and Christabel Oliouou who is currently the Mothers’ Union Literacy Trainer based in Honiara. After the 10.00am Eucharist they will address interested folk from our parish and from surrounding parishes. We will obviously need extra tea for any visitors on that day and I am sure that Nancy Fennell would welcome some help, please offer her some.
