THE GREAT ESCAPE
Squadron Leader “Buffy” Feigenbaum was shot down over Cairo during the War of Attrition between Israel and Egypt. Badly injured, he was taken to a top Egyptian hospital. There he was examined by General Ibrahim-al-Fawzi, surgeon-general of the Egyptian army. “My dear Squadron Leader,” announced the general, “I am afraid we are going to have to remove your left leg.” “Oh dear,” said Feigenbaum. “But perhaps you would be kind enough to do me a personal favour. Would you on your next bombing mission over Israel please drop the leg on my beloved country?” “Dear fellow officer,” responded the general, “I’d be delighted.” So Feigenbaum lost his left leg and the Egyptian airforce dropped it over Israel. Two weeks later the surgeon-general again approached Feigenbaum’s bed. “I’m afraid I have more bad news. We have to amputate your right arm.” “Oh dear!” Feigenbaum was most upset. “But perhaps you will drop it over Israel again.” Ten days later the general informed the Israeli pilot that he’d have to remove his right leg and again, at Feigenbaum’s request, it was dropped over Israel. Three weeks after that the general told Feigenbaum that his left arm would have to go. “Oh dear me! But perhaps you would be kind enough to drop it over Israel.” But this time Fawzi was not to be moved. “I’m afraid that this will not be possible.” “But why?” expostulated Feigenbaum. “Because we have reason to believe that bit by bit you are trying to escape!”

In the year 2000 Margaret, Elizabeth, Rachel and I went to Scotland on a parish swap, staying in South Africa briefly on the way back .... the journal continues.
At Invergowrie Sundays began not on Saturday nights at 6.00pm, but only at 10.00am on the actual day. On my first Sunday I strolled the ten minute walk down Errol Road and round the corner into Main Road to arrive about forty five minutes early. There I found the invaluable and delightful Doreen, who is the organist, sacristan and general church-minder at All Souls, pottering around a warm church having already turned the heaters on. Doreen is one of those stars you find in every parish and upon whom the welfare of the local church depends as much if not more than it does upon the parish priest. She is an unmarried, retired kindergarten teacher with two splendid King Charles spaniels, upon which she lavishes as much affection, care and time as she does upon the parish and church, and was soon to lavish upon the Neaum family as well.
Mrs Thatcher demonised
All Souls Episcopal church in Invergowrie is a perfectly proportioned, spired gem built of a red sandstone. As is the fashion nowadays, the high altar is ignored and a nave altar stands below the chancel and its choir stalls. The reasons for this are obvious. It brings the priest down to the people and makes all liturgical activity visible, helping the congregation to feel a part of all that goes on liturgically. Given the well proportioned architectural integrity of the building, however, it is regrettable aesthetically and aesthetics are important in worship. I would have preferred to be at the high altar with a good choir in the stalls! The congregation was very modest in size, about thirty including children. The small Sunday School departs to the hall after the first hymn and then processes back, often singing something, once the intercessions are concluded. The Bishop and his wife were present, and most amiable. The Bishop’s sermon was forthright, clear and short. He is a “liberal” bishop in favour of the ordination of women and an espouser of many “progressive” causes, but in a laid-back and open-hearted sort of way. Although like so many of the clergy these days, fashionably pink politically and a hater of the good Mrs Thatcher, he is easy to forgive for his pinkness because he wears his views lightly, is happy to be opposed, listens to and takes account of contrary views and above all subscribes to and loves “The Spectator”, in spite of its politics, because of the quality of its writing, its wit and its iconoclastic irreverence towards sacred cows.

The service was a case of the blind leading the blind for the Bishop knew as little about established practice at All Souls as I did. We managed to work together to make for a reasonable service I think, though not one as smooth running and effortless as I like. There is a huge organ in a loft above the chancel at All Souls, but wrapped in plastic. I am told that it would cost too much for the church even to contemplate its repair. What a crime! They make do with a potty little keyboard played by Doreen and, when I am not in charge, lots of guitar-accompanied modern songs. If I was Rector I would move both heaven and earth to resurrect the organ and get a decent and traditionally based musical offering to be a vibrant part of a beautiful church’s worship.
Sartre, Heidegger and Mammon
During Communion a member of the congregation played the classical guitar very beautifully and afterwards, as a welcome to us, we had a luncheon in the hall. One of the parishioners I talked to was a lecturer in philosophy at the University who has published several philosophical books. He is a young man with three little girls and his wife was pregnant with another (and by the word “another” I mean “another” for a little girl has now arrived). He told me that his favoured subject at school was English, but that he started Classics at Oxford, with some philosophy and fell in love with the philosophy. He is a specialist in traditional philosophy of the Plato, Aristotle and Hume variety, but managed to give me a thumbnail sketch of what Heidegger is all about which I found far more satisfying and clearer than any I had heard or read before. He did admit that Heidegger is very difficult to read and best approached through someone like the derivative and miserable little toad (my assessment not his) Jean Paul Sartre, fashionable when I was at university but now sinking well down to his deserved level of ordinariness. The young philosopher reads his Plato and Aristotle in the original Greek, needless to say. He also leads a church study group that I was soon to be a part of.
The small congregation seemed to be well endowed with his sort of talent. There was a young female doctor present, on a short placement for three months, the church’s secretary is a barrister, now a teacher, and I talked at some length to a physics degreed mother who is now a computer systems consultant and whose husband is in Dundee studying for a doctorate in some branch of biology and hoping to be a full time academic. It is not brains, education or reading that cause people to desert the church so much as affluence. Jesus is right, you cannot serve both God and mammon, and by most in our society Mammon is idolised.
Pizza and an overflowing bath
In the afternoon we made our way to 305 Perth Road and to the house of the Revd Ed Faulkes. This proved to be a three story, stone, terraced house with huge and lovely trees in the garden that are home to both grey and red squirrels. He is the priest who called on us shortly after we arrived. His house was in a state of extreme confusion and mess because he is rebuilding its stairs, reshaping and reappointing its rooms and giving the whole place a thorough going over. So much so that it will eventually be a very grand and valuable piece of real estate in a fine part of town. He is a good looking and talented classics degreed fellow with just now and then an odd little giggle that betrays his slightly evangelical version of Anglicanism. His wife came in late because she was preparing for some sort of exam in a practical arts course she that was doing and which involved displaying porcelain pottery that had required turning that afternoon. A very amiable woman, also multi-degreed, with a doctorate in psychology! Ed cooked the meal, which was homemade and very tasty pizzas, but unfortunately dished up far too late and so I had to bolt mine down and head off for the University Eucharist. Before doing so, however, we talked quite a bit about Scotland, and the oil rigs, and jobs up in the Shetlands. Very tempting, but I think the Shetlands really are a bit bleak, even for the likes of someone suffering from islanditis like me! While I was at the University taking the Eucharist, Margaret and the girls stayed behind to finish their meal at leisure and afterwards the three little Faulkes boys went to have a bath upstairs and let it overflow so that water leaked down through the floor boards all over a computer in the room below, ruining its monitor! to be continued.
PATRONAL FESTIVAL
The Revd Dr Scott Cowdell who is to visit the Parish for our Patronal Festival celebrations is at present the Rector of St Paul’s, Manuka in Canberra. On the 1st of July he moves to St Mark’s National Theological Centre in Canberra to be an Associate Professor in the Charles Sturt University “Public and Contextual Theology Strategic Research Centre” and he is Canon Theologian of the Diocese of Canberra & Goulburn. His talks to us on Saturday the 19th of May in the afternoon will be:
Sex in Public: Understanding God’s Good News about Human Sexuality.
and in the evening:
Who’s Afraid of Richard Dawkins: Faith Beyond ‘The God Delusion’.
These two sessions will comprise a serious talk followed by what one hopes will be serious questions. Hopefully we will be able to attract folk on the fringes and even outside of the Church who remain interested in liberal and thoughtful Christianity.
On Sunday he will preach on Augustine of Canterbury at the 8.30am and 10.30am Eucharists and then at the Patronal Festival Luncheon he will give a more personal address of some sort or other.
We are fortunate to have someone of his calibre coming to visit us and talk to us. He has published several books, is Editor of the St Mark's Review, a Fellow of St Paul's College at the University of Sydney and a Fellow of The Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics and a very good communicator.
JOHN THE BAPTIST
On the outside of St Augustine’s west wall there is now a very fine copper, bas relief statue of our Lord with John the Baptist standing by the river Jordan at the time of his baptism. Before I ever came to St Augustine’s I was brought into negotiations to do with this donated work of art, so it has been a very long wait to see it erected. It fits the brick wall beautifully and as time passes the copper should oxidize to a pleasing green colour. The choice of Jesus and John at the Jordan chimes in with the fountain beneath, which each year plays a significant part in the worship of the Macendonian Orthodox community who, on the Feast of the Baptism of Christ, process out to the fountain which then represents the Jordan and has its waters blessed with Christ’s cross, a small version of which is thrown in to be retrieved by youngsters, and the waters are scented with bunches of balsam, and used for sprinkling us all as a reminder of our baptism in Christ. Later in the year we will hold a grand blessing ceremony to mark this significant artistic addition to our parish church’s beauty and significance. The sculpture and artist who produced the stature is Bela Angyl of Nathalia.
MORE BEAUTY
Another addition to the beauty of our church is a recently completed and dazzling embroidered wall hanging by Ella Egan. It is planned to hang this on the inside East Wall behind the choir. As is usual with Ella’s work, not only is it masterfully and imaginatively conceived and executed it is also rich in symbolism and eventually we will explain some of this to help all to appreciate it more deeply. This is to be paid for by donations. All permanent works of art in a parish church need to have a “faculty” from the Bishop, a sensible and necessary procedure and precaution to help prevent churches being swamped with inferior kitsch or high-handed clergy from removing items they do not like! The Bishop has been involved in the negotiations for the statue and will love, I know, Ella’s hanging, so the faculties will be a formality.

Confirmation preparation sessions occur weekly during term time and are usually not at all onerous but are good fun. Candidates are expected to attend church every week.

PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE
On Sunday 29th of April, a group of local folk of a variety of faiths and none and with which your Rector is much involved is holding a food, fun and fiesta day in Princes Gardens from 10.00am to 4.00pm. It is supported too by Kiwanis and Rotary. There will be entertainment, exotic food stuffs, stalls and an auction of desirable items all in aid of farmers in trouble through drought. The distribution of money raised will be managed in partnership with the CWA. Do urge folk to support the day which should be great fun.

If anyone who doesn’t have a name tag would like one, please place your name on the list on the Narthex Table. We realise that alterations to the roll are a continuing exercise, so if you have changes to your circumstances please notify the office so the roll can be adjusted and kept up to date.
“MOVING ON”
The St. Augustine’s Grief Support Group “Moving On” will meet on Tuesday 8th May, at 7.30pm in the Narthex. The Guest speaker will be Mrs. Margaret Brewer who will speak about her amazing life in relation to “Triumphing over Grief”. We encourage all parishioners to come and bring family and friends - your effort will be well rewarded. Anyone needing transport, please phone the Parish Office.
CATECHESIS
OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD
We are collecting and making some of the “essentials” to commence this marvellous programme for children at St. Augustine’s in mid August. Peter Swindells from Melbourne delivered a small altar and lectern this week which he has made with loving care. Can a person who works with wood please offer to make a tiny sacristy cupboard, 2 small wooden tables & 4 chairs, small easels to display books, and seamstresses we are in need of art smocks & cloths etc. If you are able to help please see The Rev’d G.
