BARBED
Driving home one evening a man remembered that it was his daughter’s birthday and he hadn’t bought her a present. He drove to the mall and ran to the toy shop and asked the manager, “How much is that new Barbie in the window?” The manager replied, “Which one? We have ‘Barbie goes to the Gym’ for $24.95. ‘Barbie goes Shopping’ for $24.95'.‘Barbie goes to the Beach’ for $24.95'. Barbie goes to the Nightclub’ for $24.95, and ‘Divorced Barbie’ for $390.00.” Why is ‘Divorced Barbie’ $390.00, when all the others are $24.95?” the man asked, surprised. “‘Divorced Barbie’ comes with Ken’s car, Ken’s house, Ken’s boat, Ken’s dog, Ken’s cat and Ken’s furniture.”
FUNERAL HOMILIES
AND HELLFIRE
Andrew Neaum
In funeral homilies I sometimes say things that on later reflection leave me a little uneasy. Am I selling God, Christianity and Church short by throwing open heaven’s doors so wide that anyone can enter?
Not so petty
For example, in a recent homily I said: The God that I worship, that this church represents and that all non fundamentalist, non fanatical and non-stupid Christianity worships, is not so petty or small as to count up, or even be interested in how many times we go to church, or to deny any loving person entry into his Kingdom of Love. If he was, I could not be bothered with him.
The Church, that is, the “family of God”, the lynchpin of my existence, which I have loved, and in which I have revelled all my life, and which lies at the very heart of the culture, the music, art and literature that feeds my soul with meaning, purpose and beauty, is here to embrace us all. That is, sinners, saints, good, bad, the successful, the failures, the bent, the straight, churchgoers, non-churchgoers, believers, half-believers, agnostics, atheists.
God’s love, God’s family, the arms of Jesus of Nazareth on the cross, are all-embracing, are open so wide as to include us all. If they are not, then he is not the God of love he’s cracked out to be, but he is, he is......
Whether or not it makes me uneasy, it is nonetheless true! We do not believe that people should join up and become church-going Christians in order to save themselves from a God who otherwise will consign them to hellfire! We do not worship a selective God, who will take to himself only those fortunate enough to be able to play life by the rules, his rules.
We worship God, rather, because he exists, (thank God!), and because it is so lovely, life-enhancing and a sheer privilege and pleasure to do so. Those who do not come to church seem foolish to us, not because they risk damnation, but because they deny themselves a means of grace that enhances this life and smooths the path to the next.
Conceited twerps
The practice of the Christian faith, life at the heart of the local Church, with its lovely sacramental gift that in the Eucharist enchants the bread and wine of ordinariness with wonder and joy; life at the heart of the local Church, with its rag tag and bobtail collection of less than remarkable folk attempting to turn the other cheek, walk the second mile, love sacrificially, be compassionate and to forgive; struggling with each other’s pettiness and sinfulness, revelling in each other’s talents and gifts, is a means of grace, a sign of hope, a joy and delight that I do indeed revel in. It provides the heart beat of the culture, of the music, art and literature that feed my soul with meaning, purpose and beauty.
Little wonder then if it seems to me that only blind fools, snobs and conceited twerps could ever sneer at what to me has been so life-enhancing and lovely. Those who cannot or won’t come wholeheartedly right in to parish life I pity. They don’t risk God’s wrath, they simply turn their back on his love. They prefer dross to gold, in a sense hell to heaven, poor folk. That is all, but it is enough! For it is worse than any nonsense to do with traditional hellfire.
Hell, as traditionally depicted, is simply a less than helpful but understandable attempt to picture eternal existence without the loveliness, truth and beauty of God, which I and so many others have experienced as life-enhancing and lovely in the community of Christian Faith here on earth.
Hmmm!
From the Spectator’s James Delingpole in a column entitled: “Swivel-eyed Eco-Loons”
.....Climate change is happening, on this almost everybody agrees. But what there is definitely not general agreement on is the speed at which temperatures will rise, nor yet on when they will stop rising, nor whether we are in a position to do anything about it other than damage limitation, nor even the degree to which man-made pollution is or isn’t responsible.
Why, then, do eco-doom-mongers like Al Gore and George Monbiot persist in claiming that it’s a done deal, that we’ve only about ten seconds to save the world from total and utter man-made devastation, and that anyone who thinks otherwise is a nutter or a stooge in the pay of Big Industry who frankly deserves to be eaten alive by the mutant killer cockroaches which will surely be all that’s left to inherit the earth once Climate Change Cataclysm has happened?
Well, I’ll tell you. It’s because the sooner they can persuade the world that the debate is over, the sooner they’ll be able to inflict on us their self-hating, breast-beating, hair-shirt agenda, viz: every upland beauty spot to be destroyed by windfarms; 4 x 4 owners to be fed to starving polar bears stranded on melting ice floes; Mukharabat-style torture blocks to be built for householders who flout stringent recycling laws; the Western capitalist economy to be dragged back to the agrarian age; all meat to be phased out and replaced by tofu by 2025; etc.
I wish I were joking. Eco-fundamentalism is probably the greatest threat to our way of life after Islamism, and what’s so terrifying is the way that, more and more, its shrill and hysterical claims are passing unchallenged by a gullible public, bandwagon-jumping politicians and a compliant media.
WHY?
None of us is immune to pain. We get sick; we die. We lose those who mean most to us in the world. There is no such thing as divine protection. Jesus died an agonising death. So what did he die to prove? He died to prove the seemingly foolish claim that the self-giving love that shaped his own life is what lies at the creative heart of the universe; and that if you would name the unimaginable presence that informs it and holds it in being, then you must use the name ‘Abba’, the intimate name a child gives its father. And that life is about learning to trust that these things are so; and learning to grow in that same self-giving love.
Michael Mayne from “Pray, Love, Remember”.
IMPORTANT GATHERING
At the next meeting of Wangaratta’s Synod we are likely to decide to what extent our diocese is to move in to the mainstream of Anglicanism in Australia and to what extent, on the issue of the ordination of women, we are to hedge ourselves about with special concessions, privileges and safety clauses for those who are opposed to women priests. On the afternoon of Sunday the 18th of Feb, at 2.00 pm in Euroa, there is a Pre-Synod Meeting to articulate and listen to different views, inform, discuss and consider. The meeting is to be chaired by an experienced person from outside of our diocese and it would be good if as many of us as possible attend. Those interested in going, please put their name on the list on the narthex table. (AN)
AUSTRALIA DAY AND DROUGHT
On Australia Day I took part with members of the Islamic Community, and in particular with Azem Elmas, in a fund raising effort for local drought relief. We raised around $1500. Many thanks to those who contributed foodstuffs for sale. It proved an interesting experience for me, not least because of the contrast between the boundless enthusiasm and inventiveness of Azem and his friends and the wet-blanket, bureaucratic caution of some of those involved with the Australia Day celebrations, which all but thwarted our efforts. That we raised the amount of money we did is due more to Azem’s persistence than anything else, though the generosity of many others played its part, as did the succulence of the spiced chicken and the delectability of the coriandered cold slaw. We hope to do something similar, on a larger scale in a few month’s time. (AN)

SERVERS PRACTICE
There is to be a Servers Practice on Thursday 15th of February at 4.15pm.
CONFIRMATION 2007
We would like to identify all those wishing to be confirmed well before Easter. Squeezing in to a course at the last moment is not likely to be countenanced this year. Names to the clergy please.
LENT COURSES
Our Lenten Course this year comes from Brisbane and promises to be worthwhile. Please sign up now so that we know how much material to order. There will be two sessions every Wednesday, starting on the 28th of February. The first will be at 2.00 pm, the second, preceded by a Eucharist starting at 6.00pm and then light Lenten fare at 7.30 pm.
JERUSALEM
On Thursdays Feb 8th and Feb 15th at 7.30 in the Narthex, there will be a Power-point presentation of "Historic sights of Jerusalem". All are welcome, and at no cost too!
BAPTISM SPONSORS
If the baptisms held in our churches are to bear the fruit that they ought, we need to integrate, support and encourage the families of those baptised as much as we possibly can. With this in view your clergy have started a congregational sponsorship scheme which needs volunteers. The more the merrier, to be effective. Each family with an infant to be baptised, is given a Sponsor who, prior to the baptism, is introduced to the family at a 10.30am Sunday Children’s Church Eucharist (the second Sunday of the month). The Sponsor also attends the Baptism Preparation Evening, which takes up no more than an hour on the third Tuesday of the month at 7.30 pm. At the actual baptism, on the fourth Sunday of the month, the Sponsor sits with the family at the actual Baptism and assists them during the service. The only other chore is to take round to the family’s home a folder full of relevant information and material a week or so after the baptism and then some months later to make a follow up phone call to check that all is well.
This is not too onerous! If we have a good long list of willing folk it needn’t be all that frequent either, once or twice a year only. Sign up in the Narthex please or have a word with one of the clergy.
