ANOTHER LOCAL TALE
Gazza kept himself supplied with fish by chucking illegal traps into Goulburn River. One day, around sunset, Gazza was down at the river pulling in two of his traps, both full of fish, when he became aware of a man standing behind him on the bank. “Do you know who I am?” asked the man. “No idea,” said Gazza, “who are you?” “I am the fisheries Inspector,” said the man. “Thank heavens for that!” Said Gazza. “I thought you might be the bloke who owns these fish traps.”
MEIN LIEBSTER JESUS IST VERLOREN
Andrew Neaum
When things turn horrible, difficult or nasty the sweet Christian faith, does help enorm-ously. Not by providing easy answers, it doesn’t, but rather solace. Last week in the Lady Chapel, I reached number 154 in my daily cycle of listening to Bach’s Sacred Cantatas. It is called Mein liebster Jesus ist verloren (My dearest Jesus is lost) and is based on the account in St Luke’s Gospel of Mary and Joseph losing Jesus in the Temple. However it is universalised most effectively and movingly for us all. The text is a wonderful example of Lutheran personal piety and I loved it as I listened to it and I love it as I recall it. It warmed and warms my heart. The Cantata begins with a short and sad tenor aria:
My dearest Jesus is lost:
O word that brings me despair,
O Word that pierces my soul,
O thundrous word in my ears.
There follows a short and simple recitative:
Where shall I find my Jesus.
Who will show me the path,
On which my soul’s fervent desiring
My Saviour has journeyed”
No misfortune could affect me as much
As losing my Jesus..
Then comes one of the Chorale settings. Chorales are Lutheran hymn tunes, in Bach’s Cantatas sometimes with either their original words, often with new words composed to fit them. They are the foundation upon and around which all the sacred Cantatas are built. Seemingly artless gems that lift the heart as they occur, reoccur or are suddenly recognised embedded in lovely arias. Artless beauty turned in hundreds of artful and sometimes dazzling ways by Bach into art of the highest order:
Jesus, my refuge and Redeemer,
Jesus, my confidence,
Jesus, mighty serpent-slayer,
Jesus, light of my life!
How my heart desires Thee,
Little Jesus, aches for Thee!
Come, ah come, I wait for Thee,
Come, O dearest little Jesus!
This is followed by a tuneful alto aria less stark than the one that began the cantata:
Jesus, let Thyself be found,
Let not my sins
Be dense clouds
Where Thou, to my terror,
Wouldst hide Thyself from me,
Reveal Thyself soon again!
Whereupon the Bass voice, always used for Jesus, in a little arioso pieces speaks:
Wist ye not
that I must be about my Father’s business?
The recitative that follows continues the universalising of this lovely Gospel story. It is we who go to find Him in the temple to kiss him in repentance and belief and to know him in word and sacrament:
This is the voice of my friend,
Praise and thanks to God!
My Jesus, my faithful refuge,
Through His comforting Word
Announces Himself once more;
I was sick with pain,
Sorrow sought to devour
my very marrow;
Now, though, my faith grows strong again,
Now I am filled with joy;
For I behold the rapture of my soul,
The Saviour, my sun,
Who after a sad night of mourning
Rejoices my heart through his brightness.
Arise, soul, prepare yourself!
You must go to Him
Into His Father’s house into His temple...;
There He reveals Himself in His Word,
There He would restore you
in the sacrament
But if you would worthily taste
His flesh and blood,
You must kiss Jesus
in repentance and belief.
Next comes one of the beautiful duets that are a feature of so many of Bach’s cantatas:
Happy am I, Jesus is found,
Now am I saddened no more.
He, whom my soul loves,
Appears to me at the joyous hour.
I shall nevermore leave Thee, my Jesus,
I shall embrace Thee constantly in faith.
The Cantata closes with another Chorale verse:
I shall not leave my Jesus,
I shall walk forever by His side;
Christ shall ever guide me
To the springs of life.
Blessed is he who says with me:
I shall not leave my Jesus.
To listen to, identify with and pray a Cantata in this way is prayer of a deep sort that does not require dependence on one’s own meagre resources. It is using the great tradition, the wealth of beauty, piety, genius and devotion that our great Christian story is so inexhaustibly rich in.
The Cantatas were composed weekly for Sunday worship in Church and are based on the scriptures appointed for the day. They are made for devotional listening.
The translation of this Cantata comes from the indispensable “J. S. BACH - THE COMPLETE CANTATAS In German-English translation” by Richard Stokes. Introduction by Martin Neary. Scarecrow Press, 2000. 0-8108-3933-4
WHAT WILL YOU DO?
What will you do, God, when I die?
When I, your pitcher, broken, lie?
When I, your drink, go stale or dry?
I am your garb, the trade you ply,
you lose your meaning, losing me.
Homeless without me, you will be
robbed of your welcome, warm and sweet.
I am your sandals; your tired feet
will wander bare for want of me.
Your mighty cloak will fall away.
Your glance that on my cheek was laid
and pillowed warm, will seek, dismayed,
the comfort that I offered once -
to lie, as sunset colours fade
in the cold lap of alien stones.
What will you do, God? I am afraid.
Rainer Maria Rilke
AMAZING TASTE!
HOW SWEET THE ROUND
At last, hops go holistic – a beer that joyously ticks all those sanctified boxes. Proudly, Westerham Brewery in Kent, England, offers the William Wilberforce Freedom Ale. The anti-slave trade campaigner, subject of a new movie, began his long fight after a meeting at Prime Minister William Pitt's Holwood estate near Westerham. The pair talked under a tree that is now called The Wilberforce Oak.
The beer is described as “a deep mahogany ale characterised by its mellow bitterness and long hoppy finish.” This new beverage comes from the kind of friend we all covet – a born-again brewer. And there's no need to spike one's social conscience, either. The William Wilberforce Freedom Ale is one of the few Fairtrade beers available on draught and is made with demerara sugar from a smallholder’s plantation in Malawi.
“People trafficking is an illegal industry,” Robert Wicks of Westerham Brewery told Ship of Fools, “and we will make a donation from the sales of this beer to the Stop the Traffik campaign.”
Set them up at Westerham Brewery. From the “Ship of Fools” website.

AT DOOKIE NEXT WEEK
The Eucharist at Dookie next week will be celebrated at 12.15 and followed by lunch and the AGM. So there is no 8.45 Eucharist.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS
A lovely little Lenten opportunity is the devotional exercise known as “Stations of the Cross”. Pictures of the 14 different stations , you might have noticed, are placed round the walls of the church and a reflection and prayer are said at each one. This short devotion takes place each Wednesday during Lent after morning tea at about 11.15. All are welcome.
MOTHERING SUNDAY
Mothering Sunday marks the halfway point of Lent and it is already nearly upon us. Lent is too short rather than too long! On Mothering Sunday the 18th March, we have been in the custom of holding a parish breakfast at which men and fathers wait upon the women and mothers. There is also a guest speaker. Because we have two Sunday morning Eucharists at St Augustine’s this breakfast is rushed and the guest speaker circumscribed and limited by deadlines. This being so we have decided this year to have instead a Bring and Share Lunch, beginning at 12.00 noon. As well as being Mothering Sunday it is also Refreshment Sunday and so even the fasting break their fast and tuck in. In the Narthex is a list of what sort of food you plan to bring to share and for roughly how many..... this is to ensure that we are not glutted on quiche and starved of pavlova. We prefer cold dishes and need salads, main courses and sweets. We hope that folk from both the 8.30 and 10.30 Sunday Eucharists will be in attendance.
PRAYER LINE
Anyone needing urgent prayer can phone Hilary Akers who sets a team praying at once. Phone number: 58314267
ADMISSION OF WARDENS AND COUNCILLORS
Wardens and Councillors are to be admitted at either or the two Sunday morning services at St Augustine’s today. The Rector has still to nominate two Councillors who can be admitted later.
SOY LIFE
Our request for Soy Life Products bar codes, is going slowly, we need 50 before we can apply for a grant, so tell your friends and family to save them for you as well, and lets see if we can meet the target.
