AUSTRALIAN INGENUITY
A Victorian, a Queenslander and a Tasmanian were trying to get into the Olympic Games in Peking (not Beijing) but they had no tickets. The typically resourceful Victorian said, “I have an idea”. He went to a hardware store, bought a broomstick and walked up to the gate of the stadium. “And who are you?” He said:”Australian, Victoria, Pole vault.” “Alright,” said the gateman, “in you go.” The Queenslander, inspired by the Victorian’s ingenuity, found (even in Peking) a pizza takeaway, bought one, ate it, kept the box and walked up to the fellow at the gate. “And who are you?” “Australian, Queensland, Discus.” “Alright, in you go.” The Tasmanian dazzled by the mainlanders’ subtlety went to the hardware store and bought a roll of barbed wire. He walked up to the gateman, and said: “Australian, Tasmanian, Fencing.....”
RETURNING TO FAITH

One of my favourite authors is A N Wilson. An acerbic novelist, biographer and columnist. He has written excellent biographies of Tolstoy, Hillaire Belloc, John Milton and C S Lewis, all of which, over the years, I have read with enjoyment. His biographies of Jesus and St Paul I have not read. He has also written two fascinating and perceptive historical tomes: “The Victorians” and “After The Victorians”.
As a young man he was destined for ordination in the Church of England, and went to theological college to train, but left at the end of his first year to become first a schoolmaster and then a lecturer in medieval literature at New College and St Hugh's College, Oxford. After this he ventured into journalism and writing and for a time was Literary Editor of both The Spectator and the Evening Standard. For a while he turned Roman Catholic, but then sensibly returned to the Church of England. However in the late 1980s, after writing his biography of C S Lewis, he publicly stated that he was an atheist, and published a pamphlet Against Religion in the Chatto & Windus Counter Blasts series. He remained outside of Christianity for nearly thirty years but now, I am delighted to read, has returned to the fold.

My doubting temperament.... made me a very unconvincing atheist. And unconvinced. My hilarious Camden Town neighbour Colin Haycraft, the boss of Duckworth and husband of Alice Thomas Ellis, used to say, "I do wish Freddie [Ayer] wouldn't go round calling himself an atheist. It implies he takes religion seriously."
This creed that religion can be despatched in a few brisk arguments (outlined in David Hume's masterly Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion) and then laughed off kept me going for some years. When I found myself wavering, I would return to Hume in order to pull myself together, rather as a Catholic having doubts might return to the shrine of a particular saint to sustain them while the springs of faith ran dry.
But religion, once the glow of conversion had worn off, was not a matter of argument alone. It involves the whole person. Therefore I was drawn, over and over again, to the disconcerting recognition that so very many of the people I had most admired and loved, either in life or in books, had been believers. Reading Louis Fischer's Life of Mahatma Gandhi, and following it up with Gandhi's own autobiography, “The Story of My Experiments With Truth”, I found it impossible not to realise that all life, all being, derives from God, as Gandhi gave his life to demonstrate. Of course, there are arguments that might make you doubt the love of God. But a life like Gandhi's, which was focussed on God so deeply, reminded me of all the human qualities that have to be denied if you embrace the bleak, muddled creed of a materialist atheist. It is a bit like trying to assert that music is an aberration, and that although Bach and Beethoven are very impressive, one is better off without a musical sense. Attractive and amusing as David Hume was, did he confront the complexities of human existence as deeply as his contemporary Samuel Johnson, and did I really find him as interesting?
Watching a whole cluster of friends, and my own mother, die over quite a short space of time convinced me that purely materialist "explanations" for our mysterious human existence simply won't do – on an intellectual level. The phenomenon of language alone should give us pause......
Do materialists really think that language just "evolved", like finches' beaks, or have they simply never thought about the matter rationally? Where's the evidence? How could it come about that human beings all agreed that particular grunts carried particular connotations? How could it have come about that groups of anthropoid apes developed the amazing morphological complexity of a single sentence, let alone the whole grammatical mystery which has engaged Chomsky and others in our lifetime and linguists for time out of mind? No, the existence of language is one of the many phenomena – of which love and music are the two strongest – which suggest that human beings are very much more than collections of meat. They convince me that we are spiritual beings, and that the religion of the incarnation, asserting that God made humanity in His image, and continually restores humanity in His image, is simply true. As a working blueprint for life, as a template against which to measure experience, it fits.
For a few years, I resisted the admission that my atheist-conversion experience had been a bit of middle-aged madness. I do not find it easy to articulate thoughts about religion. I remain the sort of person who turns off Thought for the Day when it comes on the radio. I am shy to admit that I have followed the advice given all those years ago by a wise archbishop to a bewildered young man: that moments of unbelief "don't matter", that if you return to a practice of the faith, faith will return.
When I think about atheist friends, including my father, they seem to me like people who have no ear for music, or who have never been in love. It is not that (as they believe) they have rumbled the tremendous fraud of religion – prophets do that in every generation. Rather, these unbelievers are simply missing out on something that is not difficult to grasp. Perhaps it is too obvious to understand; obvious, as lovers feel it was obvious that they should have come together, or obvious as the final resolution of a fugue.
I haven't mentioned morality, but one thing that finally put the tin hat on any aspirations to be an unbeliever was writing a book about the Wagner family and Nazi Germany, and realising how utterly incoherent were Hitler's neo-Darwinian ravings, and how potent was the opposition, much of it from Christians; paid for, not with clear intellectual victory, but in blood. Read Pastor Bonhoeffer's book Ethics, and ask yourself what sort of mad world is created by those who think that ethics are a purely human construct. Think of Bonhoeffer's serenity before he was hanged, even though he was in love and had everything to look forward to.
My departure from the Faith was like a conversion on the road to Damascus. My return was slow, hesitant, doubting. So it will always be; but I know I shall never make the same mistake again....

I always remember my first ‘Vestry’ or ‘Annual Meeting’. After discussion with the wardens we asked the meeting to choose between two ways of electing the next year’s Church Council. A choice between the election of nominated individuals (which usually means a lot of talkers rather than workers) or the election of the leaders of the various parish organisations, with four members ‘without portfolio’. At that meeting and for the next sixteen years they chose the second option so that the parish was run by workers, not just talkers.
Throughout the whole of my fifty years in the priesthood I have delighted in three great blessings: a perfect wife, good bishops and excellent church-wardens and for forty-nine of them a fourth — good Church Councils (the first were a divided, contentious lot and I had to bear them for that first year! I have never been one of those priests who think it good to change wardens every year or two - when you have a good man (or as was sometimes the case, a woman, keep ‘em).
During my seventeen years at St. Mary's we had only five wardens, two died on me, one left the country and the remaining two are still serving God with all their might. None of them was a ‘Yes-man’. But I never brought any matter before the council unless we three agreed on it - I waited until I could convince them they were wrong!!
St. Mary's was a delightful church for weddings though I had, at times, to repress my flower ladies when they forgot that the flowers remained in the church for Sunday worship, and so the way into the prayer desk and choir was blocked by beauty - often with thorns!
Apart from our three family weddings, two remain in my memory, one of them heartbreaking and the other joyful. On the morning of the former, the bride's sister was killed in a car accident as she, a bridesmaid-to-be, went to collect the bouquet. What to do? Fortunately the bridegroom was a Presbyterian whose Minister was a friend and excellent chap. We met at the bride's home. Should the wedding be put off for a few months? Surely that would only renew sorrows. Should we have the wedding but cancel the reception? (There were three hundred invited guests). This seemed best, but how to let the guests know? I would do that as they all came to church. This I did, and have never had a service where there was such a sense of sorrow, love and fellowship.
The joyful one (for me) was with a bride - a lovely girl - who lived about ten miles from the church. Waiting to greet her (with my assistant) all was smiles and cameras until the bride took her father's arm in the porch - then horror! Where was the bouquet? It had been left at home! Tears! A quick word to the father to fetch it, a message to the groom and organist not to worry, and I was left with the weeping bride. I took her hand and talked. Tears into smiles! And in far too short a time the father was back and all was well. After the service my assistant said, "What did you say to her, I've never seen anything like it?" "Oh", I replied, "I've no idea, but it was a very delightful fifteen minutes for me while the groom was sweating!" And so it was - she was a lovely girl!
It's little wonder that parsons look at life differently from other folk. To see the babes soon after they were born (part of my job at the maternity hospital) and their mums too - to baptise them, prepare for Confirmation, marry them (or rather take their weddings) and after caring for them, take their funeral - all give a different viewpoint where material things mean less, and spiritual (eternal) values are pre-eminent. Perhaps the clergy should always be able to quote honestly the slum dweller's remark, “We ain't got much money but we do see life” - right through to life eternal. (To be continued)

TURATON NEWS
The first concert for the season for Turaton is to be held at St Augustine’s in the Parish Hall on May 15th commencing at 7.30pm. There
will be a raffle to be drawn at supper time and tickets for this will be available at the door on the night. All profits for this event, including
the raffle will go to St Augustine’s so please support it. We are starting early, so the night will not be too late. What a wonderful chance this is to be entranced by the delightfully rich
tenor-baritone voice of 20 year-old David Campbell who must surely be a rising star. It is also a chance to be entertained again by the completely unassuming maestro Geoff Cable. It will be a most enjoyable might out. Fliers are available on the table in the Narthex, so please take one if you can help advertise this event for us. (KM)

YOUTH GROUP
At Arise 255 tomorrow night, we will be looking at the Ten Commandments starting with “Honour your father and mother”. Bring a regular size photo to put in a frame, all welcome.
OUTREACH
Outreach is recovering from a bout of “I dun no”. It is hoped to issue editions in late June, late September and mid December. Closing date for late June will be 14th so please get your pens or word processors out. You have almost five weeks to sort your thoughts out - so please go to it. Ron Rose

PATRONAL FESTIVAL
Invitations to the Patronal Festival have been posted. The guest speaker and preacher is Bishop John Parkes and I hope everyone will make a real effort to be present. He will celebrate and preach only at the 10.30am Eucharist at which the choir will sing. There will be a said, sermonless 8.30am Eucharist for those who cannot or won’t attend the 10.30am service. The cost for the luncheon is $20.00, but if this is beyond your means contribute only what you can afford. The main course will be supplied by Azem from Lutfiye’s and will be very good indeed. There will also be wine and as always an excellent dessert.
FRIENDSHIP GROUP
For the next meeting on Tuesday 19th May we visit the Rockery and Gemstone Museum at Longwood, a journey of approximately 35 minutes. Departure time 1.45pm from St. Augustine’s car park.
